Why would parents call their child Cain/Kane?

Doesn’t it indicate that the parents are venerating a murderer, and that they want their child to follow that path?

Would people name their child as “Judas Iscariot Smith”, or “Jezebel Doe”?

I knew at least three people called Kane, and all of them were school bullies. I realise this is probably a coincidence but it got me thinking.

The name “Kane”, spelled that way and pronounced like “cane” as in candy cane, is not necessarily related to the Biblical “Cain”.

“Kane” in Irish means a fighter or warrior. “Kane” in Welsh means beautiful.

I would wonder about someone who named their child “Cain” (spelled that way), the same as I’d wonder about someone who named their child “Judas” or “Goliath”, but I’ve never met anybody named “Cain” spelled that way or who named their child “Cain” spelled that way. It seems to me that “Kane” has a totally different name origin and meaning, so I don’t wonder about that.

Short version: names come in from different languages, and sometimes that means you get 2 names that sound the same but have different backgrounds.

Cain is from Hebrew קַיִן, or roughly Qayin. It means something like “possessor.”

Kane is of Celtic origin.

Given that we speak English, all sorts of linguistic influences are around everywhere in our language.

Maybe they’re naming their child Cain after Kwai Chang Caine from the TV series Kung Fu 🤔
