Why would satan rebel against an omnipotent god?

Because God needs nothing, therefore He made Lucifer (and everything else, good or bad) out of selfless love. According to St. Paul, as mentioned in 1 Corinthians 13, God’s love cannot rape, and therefore He does not demand to be loved in return.
Yeah I know. That is what he chooses to do. But he could have made the exception not to make lucifer as an angel because he knew that HE would turn. But that is what God chose to do so, oh well.

Or was it just a symbolic, yet knowingly futile gesture to fight while knowing defeat was inevitable? Was it choosing their personal morals and values over submission to God’s?
Satan has no morals.
Yeah I know. That is what he chooses to do. But he could have made the exception not to make lucifer as an angel because he knew that HE would turn. But that is what God chose to do so, oh well.
While not a direct violation of free will, it would certainly constrain it if God refused to create any being that would rebel against Him.

It is said that Satan’s main sin is pride. Maybe Satan believes he has a chance, and he is blinded by pride that he doesn’t see that God is omnipotent.

Maybe Satan is just doing it out of spite. He turns God’s own creations against Him simply because Satan doesn’t like God, and turning God’s creations away from Him is all he can do.

It’s all speculation, nobody really knows.

Devil worshippers.
I garee about Pride-----it ultimately has to do with Pride. 👍

Because he is an idiot.

Only an ignorant being would challenge God and think they could win against him.

However before God made him as an angel, God knew he would go against him.

So the question is on God… why would you create an angel who would betray you? Or if you do create him, why even make him going against you a possibility?
“If you want to know why God allowed the Devil to lead us Astray, or if you wish to Fathom the Purposes of God Almighty, then your Eyes ought to be in your Arse.”

William Langland, “Piers Plowman”.

Don’t be rude. You and I just obviously think differently, however your post was uncalled for.

Next time, don’t say anything at all. :tsktsk:

The reply was distasteful but to think God should only create yes-men (and yes-women) is to belittle His love.

Thats because as a human you THINK that the only option is to accept or deny, but little do you know, there are other possibilities with God. (:

Believe it or not, BlueShadow123, I was not intending to insult you. Also, to tell you the truth, it sincerely did not occur to me that you would be offended by that. That quote simply leapt up in my Mind when you did your post. I was simply TRYING (and now I see VERY unsuccesfully) to make the point that some things CAN be discussed but ultimately God’s Purposes can only be GUESSED at Mostly, but not totally Discerned.

I also thought that Langland’s little quote was demonstrative of some people’s opinions of these very same discussions. Notice I put Smiling Emoticons next to the Quote—which shows that I was (partially) trying to be Funny. I guess that was a massive FAIL as well. 🤷

Again, I sincerely regret if I gave off any offense (however unintentionally). Tell you what, next time I will try to make myself more clear and open in my posts, Ok?🙂

I was listening to an exorcist about this very question, and he said that Satan never REALLY “knew” God. He always had doubts. This sounds like outlandish stuff, right? Well, I took his words to mean that Satan never had the Beatific Vision. If he did, he never would have rebelled. So, in at least that sense, there was an ignorance on Satan’s part.

That refutes whoever says that God’s only concern is minimizing evil but this is a Catholic forum. As Catholics we believe God is also motivated to maximize goodness such as the goodness of free will and the good that he alone can bring out of evil.

I believe all evil is a form of ignorance. If everyone had God’s knowledge and wisdom they would realise it is not in anyone’s interest to do what is wrong. But ignorance is not always a sign of innocence. It is sometimes wilful and culpable… and then of course it is evil.

What does that statement have to do with ‘Catholics’? You do realize catholics arent the ONLY good christians out there. Many would agree with your last statement. 👍

Why would satan and his followers rebel against an omnipotent god, knowing there was no chance they could win?
I heard Fr Pablos Straub in one of his Advent sermons say that Satan is extremely jealous that God would unite Himself to humans is such an intimate way.

Which had never even entered my mind before.

The relationship between God and Satan is one that is interesting.

God is pure love and I think that it must mean that he created this angel out of love, and out of love gave him the free will to accept or reject him. God’ s perfect love and justice means that Satan route of self-destruction is condemned.

Another interesting point is that in ancient Hebrew the word “Satan” is derived from accuser. He no doubt has a role, but we should probably be therefore VERY careful about our accusations and Jesus was very clear about this. Remove the log out of your own eye before you complain about the splinter in your brothers).
Finally the word “devil” comes from the verb “to scatter”. “he who does not gather with me, scatters”

Is Satan following a role as assigned God, as in Islam where he is only God’s puppet, and does God who is all-loving, even Love Satan? He may even communicate with God, as in Job! Anyway whatever his role or position, for us, he is a great great danger. A great and powerful dark angel run a muck!
