Why would the priest refuse to forgive my sins?

Can a priest not absolve my sins? I am married, but confessed to the priest that before my husband and I were married, we lived together. The priest wouldn’t absolve my sin for that. Why? We were married at the time of my confession, I thought I made that clear to the priest. This was about 10 years ago, and it still weighs heavily on my heart. Do I need to go to confession and confess this same old sin again, to get absolved?

Hi,

I have no idea why a priest would tell you that–unless he misunderstood you. It sounds like you haven’t gone to Confession for ten years. It is dreadful that you have felt unforgiven for all that time. By all means go to Confession and confess that sin and any others you need to confess. And then try to go to Confession once a month. We all need the graces we receive from that sacrament.
