Hello,

I was wondering if this would qualify as wasting food and what I could do about it. This is really bothering me. If anyone else has encountered this please let me know.

I have this aversion to fat in meat. When eating ribs, steak, chicken or anything else. I just can’t stomach the slimy, squishy parts of the meat. I’m not talking about them simply grossing me out. I literally can’t swallow them. I gag.

I eat every little piece of meat I can that I take or order that I can stomach, but my family is noticing me leaving the remaining parts on my plate. It is quite a lot. Normally half of what someone else could eat off the bone. They say I should not be so wasteful with my food. The say as a catholic I should be more respectful of my food.

I hate being told I’m sinning. It’s making me so upset because I try so hard to follow God. I hate being told I’m picky because I love the taste, but just can’t stomach the texture.

What should I do?

They won’t eat what’s left (Yet they tell me not to waste).

It’s too much to give to the dog.

I don’t want to risk making myself sick or torturing myself.

I live with my parents who buy all the food so I don’t get a choice in what we eat. Making something else would require that I made something different for myself every night. Besides, I can’t just cut out every meat on that list from my diet. It would also make visiting restaurants difficult

I fell like I have eaten everything that is edible for me and they criticize me for not eating every part they could.

What makes me sadder is I made the meat tonight. I wanted to learn so I volunteered. Then I get criticized about how I eat (at the table) after my hard work! I just find it rude, and it tempts me to be uncharitable by arguing or refusing them more cooking. I understand that my parents pay for the meat. I have tried to explain that while I want to eat it, it is so hard for me.

Please help, if I am sinning, I don’t want to be!

You can’t eat what you can’t eat. We all of us have a culinary aversion to at least one thing; mine’s cooked spinach. Ohh, I feel my gorge rising just thinking about it. :sad_yes:

Not liking a particular food, or even particular bits of a food, isn’t a sin. It’s a preference.

Next time meat is served, take a smaller portion, and do your level best to make sure your portion is the leanest is can possible be before it hits your plate.

Oh, and don’t feed the leftover fat to the pooch. Excessive amounts of fatty foods can cause pancreatitis in dogs.

Don’t torture yourself over that. I hate wasting food myself, but if I have steak with a one inch padding of fat all around I am not eating the fat and my conscience doesn’t bother me a bit. Don’t give this another thought but simply do what karow suggested and try to pick the leanest portion available. Suggest to your parents that they could choose leaner cuts as well, that’s healthier for everyone.

My dog never complains about the end cuts. My parents always told to me to feed the dog and that’s what I did. It was the only dog I ever had that loved peas and spinach also. Since I had to walk him for exercise he always worked up an appetite.

That was the best dog that I ever had. Since then I’ve raised a lot of dogs on table scraps. Seriously…😛

As Jack Paar used to say: “I kid you not.”

Hi ChildOfTheLight:

There’s an old, old song about this, an ancient nursery rhyme (well, it goes back to the 17th Century, and I learned it as a child, which was a very long time ago) that may offer an answer:
Code:
Jack Sprat could eat no fat.
His wife could eat no lean.
And so between them both, you see,
They ate the platter clean
Is there someone else in your family that likes the parts you do not? When I eat a steak, I rather like the edges, you see, and at BBQs I notice that I am not alone on this. My wife’s sister has an attitude much like yours; as her husband isn’t big on fat, the dog gets it (mind you they have a huge German Shepherd, and he has no problem with the remains, he’d eat anything given, and then some.) Another possibility might be to compost the edges, so they are returned to the Earth and get used for next year’s vegetable garden, say (it can be done, though composting animal remains is a bit harder than vegetable ones).
