About Liturgy, you’re adopting unfair characterization.

I think you must read SACRAMENTUM CARITATIS.

I have looked at it, but you’re right I should read it through. However, nothing I said applies to Ratzinger/Benedict’s Eucharistic theology, which is steeped in the Bible and the Fathers and not free from most of the weaknesses of scholastic and postmedieval Western theology.

No that doesn’t follow. It only means that one can’t deduce from the use of the word “eternal” that the blessedness of the saints cannot end. One may have other passages or other reasons to believe that the blessedness of the saints cannot end.

Which is no less true of those denials of the eternity of Hell which rely upon the word aiōnios as an escape from the doctrine that it is without end.

Are you claiming that the wrath of God is an attribute or activity of God distinct from his Love? God is not a being who has internal strife with his love pushing him one way and his wrath pushing him another. He is supreme love – there is nothing in him that competes with his character as love itself.

No, I’m making no such claim. But, we humans have to use words, even though God does not - & words name things as though they were separate, even if the things are in reality one. So, it does not follow from their hearing the word “Love” that people do not need to hear also the word “Wrath”. Both are in the Bible, which was not written for metaphysicians alone - & certainly not by them. It’s the record of a revelation - not a Tractatus De Deo Uno or *De Simplicitate Dei *in a Manualis Theologiae Fundamentalis: secundum mentem Doctoris Angelici Sancti Thomae de Aquino ad usum Seminariorum confectum, digestum, ordinatum et impressum. That might be fine for seminarians - it would be unintelligible to most people. 🙂 So the Bible does not use such categories - which is not to say that they don’t have their uses; they do, provided one knows what is meant by talk of God’s Simplicity. The Gospel is to be preached - so it has to be understood, not wrapped in unintelligible technicalities only the learned can understand.

Besides, we experience (what we call ) different attributes as different, partly because they have different effects - unless we are to say that the “attitude” of God to satan is identical with His “attitude” to St.Paul. Yet one is trodden underfoot & broken by Christ - while the other is His “chosen vessel”. I call that a difference - don’t you ?

cor,

I like Peter Kreft’s take on Hell. But, start with the Problem of Evil, found here:

peterkreeft.com/topics/evil.htm

This is a good warm up for his take on Hell.

(click to main page and find Hell, then click on that one)

Its no laughing matter friend.

You’d be committing an objectively grave sin. Whether it would be a mortal sin, God would be your judge.
converting from the Roman Catholic Church to Orthodoxy isn’t a grave sin. But any orthodox priest wouldn’t want you to convert unless you were sure that the Orthodox Church is the Church Christ founded. The Orthodox Church like the Catholic has valid sacraments and the Catholic Church will back that up. the Orthodox Church IS NOT heresy and I believe it is the way to become holier. You won’t go to Hell for convertingbut will be saved if you lead a life of a holy Orthodox lifestyle.

Well, actually, to go from the Catholic Church to an Orthodox Church is to commit schism – denial of Papal and Magisterial authority in the Church – and that is a mortal sin that the canons of the Church say results in excommunication.

No one can say for certain that someone will go, or has gone, to hell. But the Church clearly teaches that such a move would place one’s soul in very grave danger.

Will I go to hell if I convert to Eastern Orthodox Church?
Yes you will. You get paid, you won’t have sex, you’ll be alone. kidding

It depends if you live by the commandments of God. If you do that, then you will be saved.
