Will I need to be baptized again?

Hi all!

I have a few questions and am hoping someone here can sort this out for me.

I was baptized, according to my mother, in an Episcopal church. I went to catholic school 4 years (K-3), and was then removed to public school. I received first holy communion, and was an altar boy, (wearing a red cassock and white suplice).

I have been away from the church all these years, I am now 35, and I want to return. Will I need to be baptized again? I am waiting to hear back from my chosen parish on when I can meet with the monsignor, but was wondering what y’all think?

If you’ve had a valid Christian baptism, you cannot be baptised again. I don’t know about Episcopal, but I think they do a Trinitarian baptism, so you would not need to. If there is a doubt, then you would get a conditional baptism.

If you were baptized in an Episcopal Church, your baptism is valid. In fact, the only ones that I know of that tend of be invalid are the Mormons, and maybe the Jehovah Witnesses.

You still need to be confirmed so you will probabaly have to go through the RCIA program. You have made the first step by contacting a parish. You do not say where you received first communion (I am assuming it was in the Catholic Church) so the pastor may or may not tell you to refrain from receiving communion until you are confirmed. In any case, you will have to go to confession before receiving.

As long as you were baptized in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit you are validly baptized.

ask mom or family member who knows where you were baptized to assist you in getting a new copy of your baptismal certificate, it will list all sacraments you have received in the Episcopal Church (which would not be valid, except baptism). If you made your first communion in the Catholic church, or possibly were confirmed this won’t be listed there, but it will be in the records of the Catholic Church where you received the sacraments. IN any case, a recent baptismal certificate is a prerequisite for anyone enrolling in a sacramental preparation program. Assuming your status is as you have been told, you cannot be baptized again, Paul tells us there is one Lord, one faith, one baptism by which we are saved. You probably will join a confirmation program for adults. How long it takes depends on how much formation or religious education you have had in the past. I think your Baptism is valid.

Baptism is warranted for your life and you cannot be baptized again, even if it was done in a Christian church using water and the Trinitaria formula.Ask your mom where you were baptized and you can contact the parish and they will give you a new copy. It would be in your best interest, to enroll in a catechism class for adults, R.C.I.A. program so you can be properly reintroduced to the faith. After a suitable period of study, you can then make a good confession and receive Holy Communion if you have made it already, otherwise you will be able to formally make your other sacraments in the Catholic faith during the Easter vigil mass.
