I googled Catholic views on the Antichrist and I remember reading that the Antichrist will rule from Jerusalem. Even before 1900 mystics have claimed this.

First, how does the Church maintain its credibility as ‘infallible’ in its doctrine, if it changes its teaching on eschatology, and on interpretation of scripture with regard to the prophecies regarding ‘Israel’? From my understanding of Catholic teaching, there will not be a literal restoration of ethnic Israel with a literal restoration of Jerusalem and its temple. In addition, post diaspora ‘Israel’, and its future restoration as spoken of in the prophetic writings is often interpreted to represent spiritual Israel.

Seems to me that this alone could be a huge issue.

Secondly, there is an underlying theme within the early church fathers who did believe in the restoration of ethnic Israel, Jerusalem and of the temple which can be very controversial with the Church’s desire to maintain dialogue with the Jewish people.

On a practical level, it seems to me that if anything, it could endanger the Christian populations that live under Islamic rule.

The theme which is found in the NT, and in such fathers as Bishop Hippolytus, Bishop Ireneaus and others is that the anti-christ will be of Jewish descent and most likely from the tribe of Dan. The theme is that this anti-christ will proclaim himself to be god in the restored temple of Jerusalem.

WE couldn’t accept such a thing. As you know, the incorporeality of G-d is a very basic, fundamental belief in Judaism. We couldn’t even accept someone from Dan as the messiah, who we believe will be flesh and blood.

Bar Kochba who was anointed by Rabbi Akiba (one of the four who entered PARDES).
Bar Kochba as a false maschiach persecuted Christian Jews who did not join his army in resisting the Roman occupation. This last days anti-christ will persecute all peoples who do not worship him.

As we saw, Rabbi Akiva was wrong (others opposed Bar Kochba), and the rabbis of the Talmud call Bar Kochba (his name means “son of a star”) “Bar Kozeba” (which means “son of a lie”/“son of falsehood”). He also didn’t take on himself both the physical and spiritual leadership that the messiah would. He left the latter to his uncle, Elazar of Modi’in, and others.

The Bar Kochba Revolt was a huge reason why our rabbis have forbidden us to speculate on when the messiah will come, etc. Messianic movements always end in disappointment and tragedy and a huge crisis of faith. We concentrate on this world through upholding the Torah, and let G-d take care of the rest.

As an aside, you can see the same in history with Christian messianic movements.

Secular Zionism is therefore looked upon by some as a reason and a fount from which this anti-christ will emerge.

Well it should please you to know that secular Zionism is waning, while religious Zionism is waxing. In the past, the officers in the army, the leaders in the most elite units- they were all secular kibbutzniks. Today, it is the religious Zionists, and the trend is only strengthening. The ideology of secular Zionism is passe as well, while the Zionism of the religious comes from the Torah, so it never goes out of style.

And just as importantly, demographically, the religious are also waxing. In my community, a family with 5 kids (by the time they finish having kids) is a smallish family. There are numerous families here with more than 10 kids.

Those of us who know how much G-d loves his people Israel, have difficulty in expressing these underlying themes without seeming to be hateful and suspicious of the Jewish people, which hatred and suspicion we ought not to encourage.

Yes, this would be a concern for the Catholic church in wanting to protect her people from extreme reactions. However, prior to the current situation in Israel, I take it that Muslims, Jews and Christians lived in relative peace in the land.

This is what the Arabs keep telling everyone, but unfortunately, people don’t know the truth. I finally decided to start doing some research on it because I kept comingacross something here and something there that didn’t fit in:

1517: Safed pogrom: After having murdered the Ottoman governor, the mob turned upon the Jews and rampaged through the Jewish quarter. Many Jews were killed while others were wounded or had their property pillaged. According to one contemporary source, the Jews were “evicted from their homes, robbed and plundered, and they fled naked to the villages without any provisions.” Many subsequently fled the city.

From our perspective, that’s where it ends. No internationalization of our holy city- our capital, and no more division. Just as the Vatican would never agree to be divided or internationalized, just as Mecca and Medina would never agree to be divided or internationalized, so too Jerusalem will never be divided or internationalized. Our connection to Jerusalem is thousands of years old; and came thousands of years before Christianity or Islam. The world will just have to get used to- and accept, it.

And today, unlike beforehand, there is full freedom in the city- including freedom of religion for all.

I should have mentioned, that at first, this antichrist will not appear as some sort of megalomaniac. At some point later, he will announce himself to be ‘god’ when he sits in the temple. It is at this point, that the Jewish people will recognize him for the fraud that he is.

I personally am not comfortable with the idea of demonizing an entire population wholesale. I have met Muslims that I think I can trust.

From my end, the fact is that we are de facto enemies- of their making. If they would genuinely extend their hand in peace- as has the Christian world to a large degree, I would take it. Unfortunately, I don’t think we’re even close to that point, and if anything, the entire situation is regressing. It could get a lot worse before it gets better.

I personally am not comfortable with the idea of demonizing an entire population wholesale. I have met Muslims that I think I can trust.
