Will the Church know when we are in the "end times"?

I was recently reading that twice during his Pontificate, Pope Benedict said that we are not currently living in the “end times”. I thought it was very interesting because it implies that, whenever it is that the “end times” do come about, the Pope or the Church would be aware of it.

So, my question is: Whenever it is that the “end times” do come, will the Pope/Church/hierarchy be aware of it? Will they be consciously aware that it is going on at that time?

The world has been at the end of times ever since Jesus ascended into heaven. The Church nor anybody knows exactly when but to all of those looking for imminent signs, the best the Church can do is tell you “not yet” to keep you calm, but DO, stand by.

According to Fr. Charles Arminjon’s book, there will be no doubt whatsoever. The chapter on Anti-Christ was so frightening to me that I was afraid I would have nightmares when I slept. This was the book that St. Therese read at age 14, and stated that it greatly influenced her spiritual life. After much searching and many inquiries, Susan Conroy obtained the French copy and worked with translators to transcribe it into English. It is available on Amazon. susanconroy.com/endoftheworld.shtml

A key characteristic of the End Times events is that they are global. And, I personally believe that the End Times events have been taking place one by one over a span of hundreds of years and that now most of these events have taken place. When St. Paul says that Jesus’ Second Coming will come like a thief in the night he’s talking about how it will be a total shock to the non-believers. This could also just as well be true for the lukewarm among Christians. But a couple of verses after, St. Paul contrasts that by saying about the righteous, “but you are not in darkness, brethren, for that day to surprise you like a thief.” (1 Thess 5:4). We can’t know for sure the exact time such as day, month, year, or decade that Jesus’ Second Coming will happen. But Jesus suggests that those who know the prophecies in Sacred Scripture can tell when the time could be drawing near. “From the fig tree learn its lesson: as soon as its branch becomes tender and puts forth its leaves, you know that summer is near. So also, when you see all these things, you know that he is near, at the very gates.” (Matt. 24:32-33)

End times will bring greater persecution to Christians, Pope says
These worldly powers which seek to destroy God, noted the Pope, also manifest in the contemporary desire to keep religion as “a private thing,” alluding to the fact that today many religious symbols have become taboo.
“You must obey the orders which come from worldly powers. You can do many things, beautiful things, but not adore God. Worship is prohibited. This is at the center of the end of time.”
Once we “reach the fullness of this pagan attitude,” the Pope continued, “then yes, he will come…’ truly the Son of Man will come in a cloud with great power and glory.’”
And from our previous Pope:
And there is also a final word in Psalm 81, “movebuntur omnia fundamenta terrae” (Ps 81: 5), the foundations of the earth are shaken. We see this today, with the climatic problems, how the foundations of the earth are shaken, how they are threatened by our behavior. The external foundations are shaken because the internal foundations are shaken, the moral and religious foundations, the faith that follows the right way of living. And we know that faith is the foundation, and, undoubtedly, the foundations of the earth cannot be shaken if they remain close to the faith, to true wisdom.
Then the Psalm says: “Arise, God, judge the world” (Ps 81: 8). Thus we say to the Lord: “Arise at this moment, take the world in your hands, protect your Church, protect humanity, protect the earth”. And we once again entrust ourselves to the Mother of God, Mary, and pray: “You, the great believer, you who have opened the earth to the heavens, help us, open the doors today as well, that truth may win, the will of God, which is the true good, the true salvation of the world”. Amen. Pope Benedict XVI, 11 October 2010

Yep. This is what I was always taught.

What I have sort of heard lately is that we are getting close to the third purifercation which may be with fire and then their will be peace in the world for some time.

Yes, the Church will know. Jesus told us in the Bible what the signs will be. But, the day and the hour is known only by the Father. So watch, be prepared. Spiritually prepared.

And remember, for each, death and the judgment will come, so the ‘end times,’ while worth knowing about, should not worry us.

Peace,
Ed

Yes. The Church and the faithful will know. As it knows now to avoid dangers to the faith.

The final persecution does come with a “religious deception” (peace for denying God) as spoken of by many Saints and summed up in the Catechism (CCC 675).

Pope Francis spoke about this topic recently.
Urging those present at the Mass to continue reflecting throughout the week on this “general apostasy” which “is called the prohibition of worship,” the Pope challenged them to ask themselves “Do I worship the Lord?”
Once we “reach the fullness of this pagan attitude,” the Pope continued, “then yes, he will come…’ truly the Son of Man will come in a cloud with great power and glory.’”
Christians who “suffer times of persecution, times of prohibition of worship” because of their beliefs, are a prophecy of what will happen to us all,” he emphasized.

Their has been sign that we are in the end times, but when it,s going to happen, only God knows.

Someone I worked with who didn’t seem religious even noticed that the world is looking like how the Bible says it would in the End Times with homosexuality becoming almost like a religion.
As it was in the days of Noah, so will it be in the days of the Son of man. They ate, they drank, they married, they were given in marriage, until the day when Noah entered the ark, and the flood came and destroyed them all. Likewise as it was in the days of Lot – they ate, they drank, they bought, they sold, they planted, they built, but on the day when Lot went out from Sodom fire and sulphur rained from heaven and destroyed them all – so will it be on the day when the Son of man is revealed. - Luke 17:26-30

So I guess we should take it that the Church will generally know what is going on, but not know specific events or specific timing.

This has crossed my mind too. On the one hand I don’t want to read too much into it because I would imagine many past generations have thought the same thing, but on the other hand there are certainly some unsettling similarities.

Thanks Sirach:) Merry Christmas.

But past generations never called homosexuality ‘marriage’. It wasn’t even called ‘marriage’ by any country in the 1990’s, but now it seems like the whole word wants to call it that all of a sudden.

I would think some folks who were in the middle of ww2 or living in communist china or Russia thought they may have been in th middl of the end times…

I think most folks will have a strong sense that it is happening… There s enough written about it in revelations and in other books…

Yes. That it must have!

The important difference with that period and the “final unleashing of evil,” (CCC 677) is the hero will not be Allied Soldiers roaming through Germany bewildered at the destruction and death caused. Witnessing the scars of war. Unable to heal wounded souls.

When the Lord stops the final persecution – He will not allow evil to have another word in the history of mankind. It’s what we Christians pray for. Apocalypse of John (22:20) Marana tha—“Our Lord, come!”

It is the deepest hope fulfilled that humanity cannot bring on itself.

Hello.

Just started reading A Confederacy of Evil by Blessed John Henry Cardinal Newman. The book The Antichrist by Vincent P. Miceli - is also a solid Catholic book addressing this topic.

Since I’m very anxious anyway, it helps me more to focus on how much the Lord loves me and how I can best respond to that love instead of worrying myself into despair, but it is helpful to keep an eye on things because of that thief in the night.

Just my opinion. Thank you for this topic.

to back up what previous posters have said we ARE in the end times and we have been in the end times since the time of Christ’s accession into heaven.
