I recently came across this quote from the Greek “Orthodox” Church of america which i thought was interesting, but since they aren’t Catholic I’m wondering if a Catholic could hold this:
According to the saints, the “fire” that will consume sinners at the coming of the Kingdom of God is the same “fire” that will shine with splendor in the saints. It is the “fire” of God’s love; the “fire” of God Himself who is Love. “For our God is a consuming fire” (Hebrews 12:29) who “dwells in unapproachable light.” (I Timothy 6:16) For those who love God and who love all creation in Him, the “consuming fire” of God will be radiant bliss and unspeakable delight. For those who do not love God, and who do not love at all, this same consuming fire” will be the cause of their “weeping” and their “gnashing of teeth

I have thought of this as a beach in Florida in February. Those properly prepared enjoy the sun; while those unprepared desperately seek the shade.

I’ve heard this too. I actually found it on an Eastern Catholic site, which (assuming that that site was actually giving the Eastern Catholic view - unfortunately, I couldn’t figure out how to verify that) makes me think that it’s at the least an acceptable view within Catholicism. My own thinking, after staring at it for a while, is that it might very well be equivalent to the Western “separation from God” view, even though at first glance they seem pretty different.

Despite having looked around a reasonable amount, though, I have yet to find anything official or even from a familiar source that dealt with the issue at all though, so I have no idea.
