The cafe is completely full and I finally managed to find a seat for my mom and I. There are more customers coming in and I feel pitiful for them. Since we are required to love our neighbours, if you were me, will you stand up and give up your seats to them?

No because although such an act appears selfless, it’s actually selfish. It’s primary motive is to make the actor feel better (so no longer “feel pitiful for them”)

No I said anyone naturally would do that to avoid guilty feeling. Anthony Demello discussed this in his book Awareness

It’s polite to give up a bus seat for a pregnant woman, an elderly person, or a disabled person. Now that I am disabled, I really appreciate people who open doors, give me their seats … instead of blasting past me because I use a cane and they are in such a hurry.

But as far as a restaurant, no, I wouldn’t give up my table or my place in line for another person. As a disabled person, I don’t expect (nor want) special treatment at a restaurant. If I’m in too much pain to stand in a queue, I’ll go through a drive-through somewhere else.

God bless you and I hope this helps.

I think only people with far-end nurturing personalities would naturally feel guilty. Unless the people being forced to stand are handicapped I doubt I would naturally feel guilty about sitting because I got there first, nor would I expect other people to do it in the reverse. People in crowded restaurants or cafeterias don’t normally get up for other people. That would be odd.

Also, feelings of guilt will dull and then disappear with repeatedly not responding to them.

@njlisa I thank you for clearing my conscience.
@poche Such a gentleman. The world is lacking in gentleman like you!

A nice idea to be sure, and noble. But in 2018 be prepared to he bludgeoned with purses!

Yes, I’m afraid I open doors for women and the elderly or disabled or pregnant.
And I would give up my seat if I was young for the same people.

This is a gift I can give, costs me nothing and gives me pleasure to do so.

I’d hope someone would do the same for me if I was elderly, disabled, pregnant etc. 😉

Being disabled, my mother and I would keep our seats. Otherwise, we’d fall flat on our faces.

whenever I open the door for someone, they usually say, “Thank you.”
