Wine or Grape Juice At Seders

Reading through the thread on Protestants and wine reminded me of a question I meant to ask about something I saw at Walmart. They had an end cap dedicated to Kosher grape juice and a sign over it with a Star of David and Passover on it. I have known a number of Jewish folk over the years and without fail none ever expressed a preference for grape juice over wine. In truth most spoke very highly of a good wine if the subject ever came up. My first impression of the display at Walmart was that it was aimed at folks participating in a “Messianic Seder.” Most of the Messianic types in these parts (SE TN.) tend to be Baptists or Pentecostals who want to grow their beards and carry/wear a tallit. (I’ve known a lot of them too so I know whereof I speak.) That added to the fact of the general aversion to wine held by most Baptists and Pentecostals led me to conclude that perhaps the Messianic folks are growing in numbers in order to warrant a full endcap at Walmart. To test my theory however I thought I would toss out the question here. Are any of the four cups at a seder used for grape juice? Is there any other celebration around Passover that requires grape juice? Is there any specific call for grape juice in a traditional Jewish Passover celebration?

I’m pretty sure the grape juice is just an alternative for children and those who would rather not partake in alcohol.
 
I second the idea that possibly for children and non-drinkers.

I know that a lot of people demonstrate a kind of Seder this time of year to educate on the first Passover meal and what foods were used and their beautiful symbolism.

I went to one and found it very humbling.

FYI, we used grape juice. LOL 😛

Just because it’s kosher, doesn’t mean it’s for use at a Seder. I’d have to agree with you, though, I’ve never known a Jewish person to use anything but wine at a Seder.

They probably prefer grape juice because their wine is so awful! Jewish wine is super sweet and syrupy - ick!:eek:

My mother went to a Jewish nursing school. We tease her about the “Mogen David Communion wine.” That is all she ever drinks. 😃
