We know that too much of wine leads to drunkeness , keeping this in mind ,why did the Lord turn 6 jars into wine ??? surely this would have led the people to drunkeness.
My question is how should one understand the miracle knowing that the wine was fermented , and keeping in mind the following statement, if Jesus, the Son of God, would, for his first miracle that was going to “reveal his glory” contribute in the making of a drunken party.

Whether or not 6 jars of wine would be enough to lead to drunkenness would depend on how many people were at the party (these things lasted for days, by the way). I, for one, have not been privileged to review the guest list.

Hi Donald!
You don’t suppose that the water was especially safe to drink back then do you? Consider that most countries that historically have had poor water have made wine the usual replacement. Also, there is nothing Biblically wrong with drinking alcohol, despite some folks’ opinion, there are quite a few OT verses that speak of the merits of drinking both wine and strong drink.

Drunkeness is a personal failing…and a sin.

I think you miss the whole point of the miracle at Cana. It wasn’t about the wine…it was about compassion that spared the new bride and groom the embarrassment of not having all they needed for a proper reception.

Do we know that it was a drunken party? We have no evidence of that in the passages in question, do we? I have been to many, many, many, wedding receptions (Hey, I’m a photographer, right?) and the vast majority of them were a very long way from a drunken party, (there were a few that had some drunks there, but not that many really) so I don’t think we can make that assumption from the text of this NT passage, do you?
Pax vobiscum,

Wedding party must have arranged enough wine ,which for some reason ran out and surely from the comment of the wine taster , it seems that the party was coming to the end . By now most of them must have been drunk and the custom would have been to supply the inferior wine last.

“Wherever the Catholic sun does shine,
There’s music, laughter and good red wine.
At least, I’ve always found it so:
Benedicamus Domino!”

As a matter of fact, one of the most ignored (by the pro-tithing, anti-alcohol fundamentalist/evangelical crowd) is the command to use part of the tithe to finance a party in the presence of the Lord, including wine and strong drink. Excerpt appended below is KJV, because that’s what most of them will read:
22 Thou shalt truly tithe all the increase of thy seed, that the field bringeth forth year by year.
23 And thou shalt eat before the LORD thy God, in the place which he shall choose to place his name there, the tithe of thy corn, of thy wine, and of thine oil, and the firstlings of thy herds and of thy flocks; that thou mayest learn to fear the LORD thy God always.
24 And if the way be too long for thee, so that thou art not able to carry it; or if the place be too far from thee, which the LORD thy God shall choose to set his name there, when the LORD thy God hath blessed thee:
25 Then shalt thou turn it into money, and bind up the money in thine hand, and shalt go unto the place which the LORD thy God shall choose:
26 And thou shalt bestow that money for whatsoever thy soul lusteth after, for oxen, or for sheep, or for wine, or for strong drink, or for whatsoever thy soul desireth: and thou shalt eat there before the LORD thy God, and thou shalt rejoice, thou, and thine household. (Deut. 14:22-26, KJV)
Sort of puts a new spin on “all day singin’ and dinner on the ground,” doesn’t it 😛

Doesn’t wine usually symbolize God’s abundance?

“And wine that maketh glad the heart of man, and oil to make his face shine, and bread which strengtheneth man’s heart.” Psalm 104:15

This passage foreshadows two of our sacraments.

All strong drink does is bring out what is already in a man’s heart. It’s not what is consumed by a man that defiles him. See Mark 7:17-23

As an old wise man once told me, “Never do business with someone until you have drank with him for the alcohol brings out his true nature.”

I suppose if one is unsure of who or what is really dwelling within then maybe alcohol should be avoided.

As for us, men of God, he has provided us with wine to “maketh glad the heart of man” and I am glad of that!

Fruit of the vine and the work of human hands it does indeed become our spiritual drink; Blessed be God forever!

I have always thought this was a very sweet story. He was reluctant to do this miracle but conceded to please his mom and save the bridal party embarrasement. There is also something uplifting in the fact that despite the major troubles of the world-like starvation and wars- we can come to the Lord with our sometimes minor problems.

There is nothing wrong with drinking alcohol in moderation. In fact, alcohol is a gift from God. It is nice to know, isn’t it, that our Lord doesn’t frown upon fun.

I pondered over this post and realized that Psalm 104:15 foreshadows five of our sacraments.

Our God is a glorious God!

SPOKENWORD:
I choose to get drunk on new wine.I never have a hangover. 😃
I drink wine and beer and never get a hangover or drunk. That’s because I drink in moderation and stop at one drink.🙂

We should also remember that the wedding party and guests all walked no cars. That is what is truely wrong with drinking wine and beer and other drinks if we drive then we could kill someone. I walk to Church so I can take wine for communion. Oltherwise I hate the taste of wine and I hate the way it makes me feel. But I really love to go to a party and pretend to drink and watch everyone else get drunk. Then I can pretend to be drunk and remember every silly thing I did. It is not wrong to drink It is very wrong to drink then drive.

We do not take wine for Comminion. We receive the Blood of Christ under the species, or appearance, of wine. True, the Precious Blood does still have all the physical properties of wine, including the properties of accohol, but drinking such a small amount of alcohol as would be the equivalent of the small sip customarily taken when one receives the Precious Blood should not cause any impairment for any person who does not have some extreme sensivity to alcohol. You know your own physical health better than I do, of course, and I commend you for your concern about driving while intoxicated, but unless you do have some extreme sensitivity or allergy to accohol (or any other component of wine) you should be able to drive after receiving the precious Blood without any impairment.
