So I got a Reddit account about a year ago. I was interested in something pertinent to my science fiction writing at that time. Then I got sidetracked and didn’t go on there much. Logged into it last night to post on another topic. Decided to find the list of all Subreddits.

Oh my. 😮 I knew there was some NSFW content but I had not realized how bad or that there is a link directly to porn. Ugh.

I want to continue accessing the quirky and interesting discussions that aren’t blatantly trashy. I’ll probably not go to Reddit if I can find something similar elsewhere though, as I don’t want to overly support their popularity and fiscal clout. And they support some causes like Planned Parenthood and Freedom From Religion. Yuck. 😝 Nuff said.

I guess it’s a perennial problem with any social media that doesn’t specifically restrict “adult” content (quotation marks to underscore the irony as that word, or “mature” denotes smut that appeals to the adolescent, immature person, literally or figuratively). I don’t know if there is a way to block the really bad Subreddits from even displaying?

Your thoughts and advice appreciated!

Yes. I’m pretty sure Reddit has a setting for accounts to block NFSW (Not Safe For Work) content. At least, it does on my Android app. The flag on mine is enabled and I never have a problem avoiding that trash.

Yeah, I don’t recall ever coming across that stuff on Reddit, so I must have some sort of filter turned on.

That said, if you want to spend your time elsewhere, that’s probably a good thing. Reddit is a good site to go to waste a lot of time without really reaping much in the way of benefits.

Thanks. I’ll look for it.

ETA: Found that my settings already have “adult content” turned off; must’ve done that when I first set up the account. And it appears there may be a way to block content with certain vulgar terms, which may make my overall experience less squicky. Except that I may have to type the words in to block them, ewww. 🤮

Oh and I don’t often use apps for social media, except for Instagram because it is easier to crop photos with the app. I’m old school, prefer access via browser. So it probably will require a bit more digging to find the settings than it does with the app. But I’ll find them.
