I passed many lovely churches on the way home tonight, and wished I could go in and experience Mass. I hope everyone had a lovely time, and Merry Christmas to all here!

I had an awe inspiring Midnight Mass at the Cathedral.

It was hexalingual! Throughout the Mass we heard various words, expressions, prayers and hymns in: English, Hebrew, Greek, Latin, Italian, and German.

Many parishes had their doors open as early as 5pm with Masses at various times leading up to Midnight Mass.

I went to St. Patrick’s Cathedral Midnight Mass - my first time going to this Midnight Mass as it is an advance ticketed event and in previous years, getting a ticket has been an unwieldy snail mail process. This year, they made some tickets available via Internet which was much easier, so I got one. I have been to St. Patrick’s a number of times before for Sunday Masses, daily Masses, and their non-ticketed holiday Masses.

I had to laugh when I got in there because the seat I was randomly assigned through ticketing was the same seat way in the back on the side with no view (except TV screen) that I normally seem to end up in when I have gone to non-ticketed holiday Mass. The Mass was very nice anyway, especially the music and homily. It ended up being said by an auxiliary bishop since Cardinal Dolan came down with the flu.

We’re having a few days away from home, in a small country-house hotel in the heart of England. We arrived yesterday, so I’d already looked to see where I could go to Mass. The church in town had an 11am Mass, but I suspected it would be very busy. So, I saw that the priest for that church also had responsibility for a small village church about 12 miles away, and they were having Mass at 9am.

We got up early and my (non-Catholic) husband (God bless him) drove me to the little village. There must have been only about 30 people in the church. It was a lovely, traditional Mass, with organ music and lots of incense. The elderly priest gave an excellent homily. People smiled and waved at me, the stranger.

This is one of the many things I love about the Catholic Church. We’re part of a family, we can just turn up without an invitation. 🙂

I went to my first midnight Mass at my local parish. It’s a small fairly plain church but the Mass was beautiful and moving with hymns in five languages and we also had two people be confirmed and have first communion.

To top it off my dad came with me. It was his first time inside a Catholic church since his family left to join a Protestant denomination when he was 17. I talked to him after Mass and he said it totally changed his view on the Church and the bad experiences he had. He also said he can understand why I want to join the Church.

I like the morning mass best because the gospel reading is from John: “and the Word was made flesh and dwelt among us.”

I’m so glad you were able to reach an understanding with your Dad. What a nice Christmas gift for you.

Be welcome to sit in next Sunday, feast of the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph.
