Hello Folks,

I have a previous friend who is involved in witchcraft. Several years ago we had a falling out because she kept criticizing my faith. She acted as though she was my personal spiritual adviser, and I finally had had enough of her bullying and backed away from the relationship.

The other day, I put her name into Facebook to see how she was doing. To my complete shock, she had become a witch!!! She is now all things bizarre, i.e., she’s a psychic, tarot card reader, witch, she’s into giving counseling to people who have been abducted by aliens – and the list goes on. Previous to her strange transformation, she was a devout Catholic. In fact, I met her in RCIA 12 years ago, and she loved her Catholic faith.

Here’s what I want to know: How does a person go from being a devout Catholic to the occult? What can I pray besides asking God to deliver her from the occult? Are there particular saints I can call on to intercede on her behalf?

I sent her an e-mail on her witch site on Facebook, but got no response. I told her I was concerned about her soul.

I am still completely flabbergasted with her transformation. I just do not understand how someone can go from loving the Church to loving the dark arts. It is totally mystifying and troubling.

There but for the grace of God go I.

I can’t speak for anyone else, but I know in myself how fragile I am and how easily I fall. I don’t find it any more surprising that an enthusiastic Catholic would become a tarot-card-reading witch, than that an enthusiastic catholic would become a lukewarm catholic who skips the occasional Sunday Mass or dissents from Church teaching on contraception.

Sin is sin. Some of us fall in ways that look dramatic to the world; some of us fall in ways that don’t look dramatic to the world. God knows the heart. Your be-witch-ing friend may (may) be closer to returning to God than that Mass-skipping Catholic is.

As for what you can do, you’ve already sent an email. Now do pray. I’d particularly suggest prayer and fasting combined. As to specifics I’m no expert as to recommended formal prayers etc, so I’ll leave that bit to others.

Some people are attracted to the exotic, or like to stand out in the crowd.

Some people turn to the occult when they lose control of their life or have a severe loss and they panic and think God’s moving “too slow” to help them.

I had a purportedly atheist friend who’s teenager was going through a difficult phase and the mom was consulting tarot readers!
She was just that scared.

Really, only your friend can say why

It’s actually a fairly short step, because the Catholic faith has a very strong belief in the supernatural that some other belief systems (mainline Protestantism, atheism) do not share. Also, the Catholic faith is the one that in Europe replaced a lot of the old pagan and witch traditions, and some of the traditions (such as certain feast days) were made into Christian traditions by the Catholics. So some people see the pagan faith as being part of their original heritage.

Just pray for your friend. You can ask the intercession of saints like the Blessed Mother, St Joseph, St Michael, St Patrick, and Blessed Bartolo Longo (a former Satanic priest who converted) for her.
