Dear Brothers and Sisters,
Today in the USA, we celebrate our National Day of Thanks. I am very grateful not only today, but everyday for all God has blessed this country with, since its beginnings. I am also grateful for all He has blessed me with, in particular, as the grandchild of Irish immigrants who came to this country before I was born. It is in my Irish Catholic heritage, it seems to me, that my love for God took first root.
Recently I was reading an article by Servant of God Frank Duff in the magazine “Maria Legionis” titled: “The Faith: The Nation: Prime Principles of Survival”. I’m sorry this little magazine is not online. It is published quarterly in Philadelphia and probably on a very low budget, but it is excellent. If anyone is interested, send me a PM and I’ll give you the address. (Subscription $8. per yr.)
Of course, I am grateful to be born here in the USA where I can practice my faith freely. The article I am referring to, however, points out that a country as well as any citizen of any country can “lose” faith in God. The USA was never a “Catholic Country” in the way and to the degree Ireland was, but the article points to trends which have led to the terrible conditions in Europe and were only beginning in Ireland when this was this article was written. Frank Duff died in 1980.
Servant of God Frank Duff, like St. John Paul II saw around the same time a decline in Marian devotion:
As we give thanks today to God and to all His Saints, and angels, especially Mary our Mother and our Guardian Angels, let us ask again for the graces we need to honor Our Father as Jesus did in this world that we may one day rejoice with Him in an eternal Thanksgiving in our heavenly home. Let us ask the Holy Spirit to kindle in us that same Fire of Love which burned in the Immaculate Heart of Mary. May we honor her as the Trinity honored her in making her their immaculate and holy temple, and the first tabernacle for the Word made Flesh.

One of the ways Frank Duff sought to rekindle the dwindling faith he saw was to encourage, much like our present Holy Father, missionary zeal. Pope Francis is carrying on the mission of Christ as did St. John Paul II, Pope Benedict XVI, Pope Paul VI and Pope John XXIII calling for re-evangelization. Mary is the “Star of the New Evangelization” .
