I was talking to a Catholic friend who actually brought this up regarding noticing that more people these days are making jokes, derogatory comments, and other barbed statements regarding the recent scandals well within earshot making sure she would hear knowing she was Catholic.

I hadn’t really thought about this but once she mentioned it I thought about it a bit and must say I have also noticed more snide comments in recent months.

I was wondering if others have noted this and more importantly would like to know how you handle these little digs personally?

I have not noticed personally these things.

People may take this opportunity to attack our two thousand year old Church but a breeze doesn’t affect a redoubtable bastion of Truth like the Catholic Church and nor should you let it bother you imo.

I’d try to find it in my heart to forgive and then pray for them.

We might all do well to pray for our Church too at this time, if you have a Rosary perhaps you could pray that way too.

I am the only Catholic in my family. My grandmother, who is Episcopalian now but grew up Christian Scientist, actually sent me a lovely but somber note telling me about a couple of the scandals in her tiny little church, and from her days as a schoolteacher, and even a couple sad incidents in our own family. She said that while the world is piling on the Church, she knows that abuse is not only found there, and she’s glad my husband and I are raising our children with religion.

It was so heartening in those first few weeks, and it’s all that anybody said to me personally.

What most people (and the media) miss is that sexual abuse of young people is at epidemic levels in society at large.
