Some time ago I heard an interview on St. Joseph Catholic Radio of a man who runs just this type of organization in the USA. They are active in California and in other places. They go out in pairs, knock on doors, hand out brochures such as CA’s “Pillar of Fire, Pillar of Truth”, and offer to answer questions. It seems they are generally well received and they have brought some people into the church. Unfortunately, I can’t remember the name of the man or the organization. Here is a link on articles written about Catholic witnessing to others. Depending on where you live and what parish you are living in, you may find an active door to door ministry very close to you. In the poorer neighborhoods of Chicago, nearly every parish has some form of street ministry. The more affluent neighborhoods you won’t find it.
As a deacon…we are called to do marketplace ministry right in our places of business with the way we react, treat and work with those around us…whether it be customers, coworkers, etc…
By our baptism we are called to be Christ to one another. The question is how are we picking up that call?

One of the reasons we are not as active in door to door ministries as JW’s is that we view the desire to convert as sent by the Holy Spirit first. The Spirit leads people to the Church, not us, we only provide a road map. And it is kind of silly to be banging people over the head with a religion they are not desirous of. On the other hand, one of the greatest friends an RCC catechists can have is a local JW organization. They irritate people so strongly, that they actually drive people our way.:whacky:

In addition door to door witnessing while it has some good things about it is not the most efficient way to spread the gospel.

Most people join a church not because someone knocked on their door but because someone who they are friends with invited them to church.

The main reason JWs go from door to door really has little to do with converting (although that can be a good by-product for them sometimes) and more to do with literature placements particularly in countries that do not have sales taxes. In countries that have sales taxes, the JWs are told not to ask for a specific amount in return for the literature. In countries that do not have sales taxes, they still ask for a specific sized donation for the literature. Until the early 1990’s the JWs used to sell the Watchtower magazine for 25 cents a copy in the USA until the gov’t started threatening to charge them sales taxes. To get around the sales tax, they quit asking for a specific amount of money for the literature.

Some Catholics do go door to door but not like the JW’s though. We have the truth - they don’t.

IF we have the truth then what are we doing to spread it?

take your light out from under the basket and let it shine.

We live our Faith and others see it. What better way to share our Faith then by our example?

Talk to your local priest or bishop, get permission/guidance then study up and go door to door. Start a group in your neighborhood!
