I am curious…I have attended my in-laws missionary Baptist Church, and heard men affirming agreement during the surmon when the spirit moved them, by calling out Amen.

I was asking why women didn’t do the same and was told that they are not allowed? Why? Doesn’t the Spirit move women too?..and if it Were really The Holy Spirit Moving these men to call out…if The Spirit came over a Woman would she not have a choice but to call out too?

When I asked the in-laws they almost looked embarrassed, shrugged their shoulders and changed the subject…

I suppose they are looking at that passage about women being silent in church…???

Coming from a Baptist background I can tell you that it varies from church to church. The more conservative Baptist churches do not allow the women to speak up because of Paul’s admonition in his epistles for women to keep silent.

However, the more liberal and/or charismatic Baptist churches allow women to do so. I’ve been members of both kinds of churches. I always felt it was proper for only men to speak up. However, I don’t really believe it matters.

As with all things Baptist, they are autonomous, so it depends on the individual deacons/elders and frankly the people who attend. For some congregations it is simply a cultural phenomenon while others look at it from a theological viewpoint.

Peace…
