Winnipeg, Canada – A new study conducted by researchers at the University of Manitoba finds women who have had abortions are about four times more likely to abuse drugs and alcohol as those who carried their pregnancy to term. The authors confirmed a link between abortion and the substance abuse issues.

My heart shatters for women who’ve had this happen to them. They don’t need to ruin their lives with drugs and alcohol as well.

We need to keep these women, and the men too-in our prayers.

This article seems to be coming from a fairly biased source. Are there other articles on this study?

Well, yes, you could go to the actual medical journal article:
publications.cpa-apc.org/media.php?mid=951

The conclusion of the research is that:
SUDs (substance abuse disorders) appear to be more prevalent in women who report having had at least one abortion. Mood and anxiety disorders, as well as suicidality, are also associated with a history of abortion but the relation is somewhat weaker and less consistent. Further, exposure to violence is a confounding factor in several of the associations between mental disorders and abortion. Our study does not support a unidirectional relation between abortion and mental disorders. Women undergoing abortion are just as likely, if not more likely, to have a pre-existing mental disorder than to develop a new mental disorder subsequent to the abortion.
In other words, abortion may be correlated with mood disorders, but it hasn’t been shown to cause mood disorders. If any thing, the mood disorders may exist before the abortion occurs, but more research is needed.

Drug and ethol abuse aside, there’s also this study:

Now before peopel go questioning whether or not this chap was bias, the guy is pro-abortion, and quite unashamedly so, he was interviewed on one of our national current affairs programmes, and the reason he did the study was because he wanted to prove that the pro-life arguments of abortion = mental health issues, was wrong.

Turned out we were right.

Of course, the problem here with these studies or any study that looks at the negative or positive aspects of abortion, is people will always point a finger and claim bias, until we all get over ourselves and just allow a really good, solid study, we’re not going to have any sufficient evidence that shuts up the other side.

Is this surprising?

I hope you’re not attributing drugs and alcohol to abortions though, far more likely that the type of person who abuses drugs and alcohol will have an unwanted pregnancy and need the abortion to begin with.
