OK. I really feel I am being tested beyond my limits.
I posted earlier about a work situation where I felt Sally was asking too many questions and management decided that ‘Jane’ will now be answering all questions. I decided to go with the flow and be co-operative about the whole thing.
This was suppose to start last Monday. Well, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, Jane was too sick to come to work. So, I put all my frustrations aside and answered questions. It went over OK. I kept my cool. Jane came to work Thursday and Sally kept asking me questions and I was able to politely say ‘These are questions that should now be going to Jane’. Sally started to go to Jane. Nonetheless, I did have to discuss some things with Sally Thursday and Friday. It is obvious Sally is just not competent enough to do the job. But again, I kept my cool and things went well and we even did some social talk.
Well… there is a guy ‘Dave’ who finished working on his project and was told to work on mine. I quickly showed him what was required. Management said ‘Dave has been here almost a year so he just needs a quick run down’. Of course I worked closely with Dave and I know he too is not that competent. But, I cashed in on what management said, gave him the quick run down and left him to do his thing. His questions are minimal (thank God) and I was able to handle them. I know that an experienced person could easily do 5-6 files per day. He does one. I know he wastes a lot of time but I just ignore it since I figure management will see how much he is handing in and how much other people are handing in.
This is the catch. I set up an organizational structure to keep everything in its place. I created folders to save Excel files in a particular structure. Dave told me ‘I don’t like this structure, how about we do this’. I explained to him that I have been training people and this is the structure me and the other 6 people are use to. I also explained that it would be too much work to rearrange all the files and then the new people would come back to me with too many questions. Well, he said ‘I don’t like the structure, I will do it differently’. He even went so far as to create folders in my folders that did not follow the system. I said to him 'If having your own structure means that much to you, please keep your work in you own folder but please do not create new folders in mine.
Well, he kept creating his own folders. So, I took his work, copied it to the correct folders and sent him a friendly reminder about the importance of following the system. When I asked if he received my email he said ‘Yes, I will talk to management about doing it my way.’ that was Thursday evening.
Friday morning I acted as nothing happened and did pleasant social talk with him. Again, he created folders in my folders and did not follow the system. Again, I put his work in the appropriate place, sent him a second friendly reminder and copied the manager.
The worst part is 3 weeks ago, a girl Karen came up with a great idea for the project. I though it was a good idea, but not a necessary idea so I said 'I don’t have the authority to make people do what you want. Feel free to approach others and ask them if they would like to do that. She went and asked everyone. Dave loved the idea and I saw her spend 10 minutes showing him how to do it. 2 days ago, a manager sent an email to everyone stating ‘Dave sent me this great idea, please everyone start doing it’. It was the idea Karen had and Karen showed Dave how to do it.
Dave stole Karen’s idea and took all the credit for it. How cruel!
I honestly don’t know what to do if Dave keeps creating folders. I feel really slapped in the face that I did a lot of good work to set up this project, get it on a role, did a lot of extra work to make it run smoothly and 8 weeks into it, Dave shows up and purposely refuses to co-operate when he is only doing 1 file a day when 5 can easily be accomplished !
