I work with contract attorney’s who do document review, and my job is basically to manage the office and all of them in the office as well. There’s about 60 of them, and I get along with most of them, and there’s a a few I am actually really close with and talk to. We all sit in different rooms, but they are all very close together. Today, I heard music coming from one of the rooms, and I am cool with two of the reviewers in that room. So, I went inside their room, and said ‘are you guys listening to music in here?’ And, one of them said ‘yea, we are listening to Christmas music.’ So, I said in an almost joking and friendly manner, but also serious, ‘can you turn it down’ or something along those lines. And then he said ‘I did’, and we kinda kept going back and forth, but just being friendly with eachother. And, the 3rd reviewer in that room who I don’t care for, but he tries to be friendly with me… (He is a pretty condescending person), said ‘can you go back to doing work f’in retard.’ I was in shock, and wasn’t sure he was talking to me, and said ‘excuse me? Are you talking to me?’ He then said ‘go back to work’ or something like that. So, I said ‘i am working, but doesn’t look like you are… Listening to music and on Alex and Ani sites.’ Then I said right after that, ‘and don’t call me a f’in retard.’ I was not happy with myself that I cussed at work in an unprofessional way, even though I wasn’t cussing AT him, I still didn’t feel good about it. One of the reviewers heard me, but wasn’t sure exactly what happened so I explained to her, and she told me that I should tell our boss, but I didn’t want to make it a huge deal and have him possibly get in trouble or fired (I have heard from another reviewer that the contract attorney’s can get fired easily). Anyway, she ended up telling our boss and my boss asked me about it, so I told her exactly what happened. She talked to the person above her, and they found it very serious and are going to talk with him next week about it. I really hate this type of drama, and feel like i should had just left it alone and not responded back or told the other reviewer what happened. How would any of you handled the situation?

Well, don’t swear even when sweared to in formal situations.
If he has a position above you, after he said to get back to work, then say “Yes, sir m, will do. And you as well.”
Or something.

His position isn’t above me, even though he is an attorney. Mine is more above his actually, because I manage them. But, in a way that’s why I felt I should had been more professional in handling it,

First rule of the office–ANY office–is: if you’re not “cool” with everyone, then don’t be “cool” with anyone.

Everyone in the work place should be treated the same. It’s too easy for hurt feelings to develop when not all employees treat each other the same. Stay professional on the clock. After hours, hang out with whom you wish, behave with them how you wish, but once you walk in the office, it’s all business.

I’ve worked in various work environments, from casual to formal. That’s what’s always worked best for me.

tough to follow that post

a little bit rambling; sounds like you had a “bad day” at work’ i am m not pre-judging…

can you summarize what the catholic issue is? 🙂

I know, it’s a little confusing to explain how it went exactly through text. I guess I just wanted to see how others would have reacted in this situation, and if the way I reacted wasn’t good. I also don’t want him to get fired, so I felt bad about telling my boss.

What the employee said was a serious matter, for more than one reason. I would have complained of it, myself, and even if you weren’t offended personally, that’s the sort of language that will offend others and make the workplace hostile. In my opinion, they would be perfectly and legally justified to fire him immediately, and they certainly shouldn’t renew his contract.

as best as i can understand from a long, rambling, under-punctualized post; you handled the situation correctly…

Especially in a professional office, you shouldn’t take that. I put my foot down when it comes to profanity in the work place. It isn’t appropriate. Especially when it’s directed at a person in the workplace.

I wouldn’t be upset over this. You need to protect yourself in the workplace. Otherwise you’ll get walked all over.
