Is it wrong to work at a store with unfair prices? Here is my situation.

There is a store near me that will take you items and sell them on eBay for you. I, personally, think that the commission they charge is way to high, and I think that they take advantage of people’s willingness to give their items to the store to sell when they could easily learn to do it themselves.

My dilemma is that I will need a summer job in a few months, and I suspect it is going to be very hard to find one this year. I think the eBay store would actually be a great fit for me, as I am good with computers and experienced with eBay.

What do you think?

I think you are completely in the clear in working there.

The people who sell their items through the store don’t seem to think it’s too high. If they’re only selling a few items, it may make a lot of sense to pay a little more and not have to spend hours learning how to use E-Bay.

As long as the store is fully honest about what it will cost, and doesn’t cheat anybody, then it is up to the customers to determine if the price is too high or not.

Think about a really expensive restaurant; there’s one in NY City that costs about $250 per person for dinner. Now, I would never pay that much, but is the price “unfair”. The customers know what they charge, so, if they think it’s worth it, why should anyone who works there worry? If the price is too high, they will go out of business.

God Bless

The store does more than just sell the items. A new e–bayer would have difficulty selling items because they have no reputation built through feedback from buyers. A store such as the one your work for, not only does all the work of writing the descriptions, posting the items, taking the photos, paying the ebay fee and shipping the itmes on time but it also provides use of their rating to give items a better chance to sell. For an individual to take the time to build the rating would already cost more than what they would pay to the ebay store.

How is it unfair if the selling party agrees to the conditions of any sale, including the commission charged. Whether you think the commission is too high is irrelevant. You are not a party to the agreement so its actually none of your business.
I should also add that you should be careful about spreading things like that because if the store hears about it you could end up getting sued.

I’m sure all of this pricing is agreed to on the front end. If the person does not want them to act as their agent they are free to go elswhere. You would not be mistreating anyone.

Besides, please do not be too quick about saying they charge too much of a percintag. Now maybe you are right but think abouit this please: In my job I buy from the factory for $1.00. I sell for $1.45. The end user (consumer) pays $3.00. And I deal with product I sell for over $1,000.00. That’s just business.
