I feel very worthless anymore, I have been sending my application in to some jobs, but have had no luck. I can only get jobs in town because my Grandmother doesn’t want to really drive me to work so I am really trying to find something within walking distance.

I was laid off at my last job, since they didn’t bring in the profits they were expecting (and because they have a company in China…). I really want to be able to earn my own money and to feel like I have some self-worth in this world. I wonder if working at home is something I should look into. Does anyone here run a home business? Do you have any words of advice? Are there any liegtimate jobs that higher people to work at home? I pray for God to guide me and I can only hope that he pushes me in the right direction on of these days.

Thank you

Though I have no answers for you, I will be watching this thread myself for some ideas. I would like to have a part time job for supplemental income, and at home would be great if it’s legitimate of course. So many scams about “work at home”…usually the modern day versions of “envelope stuffing” scams exist out there. I pray that you find a work at home option good for you.

I will pray for you too, Thank you 🙂 Hopefully this thread is of some help to you. I too am familiar with all the scams, the ones that try to lure in mothers even. Also becareful of the ones that claim you need to buy a booklet or some nonsense to find out more. Becareful anyone when searching online and offline for work at home jobs. Never pay for something, a real job will not ask you to buy a booklet or something to find out more!

A lot of document translators work at home, receiving the document to be translated over the Internet or by fax. I think there are agencies that will facilitate translators getting assignments.

Should be:
Are there any** legitimate** jobs that **hire **people to work at home?
(Since jobs don’t hire people, the sentence is also awkward.)

I know this is just an online forum, so maybe those mistakes mean nothing. Nevertheless, have a trained person proof-read your resume critically. As you can see, a spell-checker won’t do it, since “higher” and “hire” are both words.

You may want to take a career or resume-writing workshop. You don’t want to make the kind of mistakes that put you into the round file before you are even given a good look. Knowing and practicing how to apply and interview for a job are huge advantages. Being well-prepared and knowing it feels good, too!

In the meantime… try to remember that God loves who you are, not what you do. Having your self-worth where it belongs will help you get through the rough times and out-and-out failures that we all have to go through.

Good luck!

BLB_Oregon has some good advise. Make sure your resume is well written and has no spelling errors in it.

There are plenty of “work at home” opportunities out there. For one, I am an Avon Ind. Sales Representative - I don’t make a lot doing this but enough to cover my expenses in the business and to purchase my own products. This is one of the least expensive Home Based business out there. The company is over 100 years old and has a sound base. It only costs $10.00 to get started and that fee covers brochures for two campaigns, a planner, a tote bag, samples and other good business materials (can you tell I am also a leadership representative?)

There are other Home Based businesses but most are also what are considered “party plan” businesses. I am also a Stampin’UP Demonstrator, this business requires you to go to someones home and demonstrate the use of Rubber Stamps, you make cards, scrap book pages, boxes etc. to demonstrate how to use the rubber stamps (this one is fun if you can get people to book parties).

Discovery Toys, Home Interiors, Mary Kay, Creative Memories, Tupperware are some other Home Based businesses that I can think of off the top of my head. Now all of these require a lot of work to make money and there is a start up fee for all of them as well.

Now, there is also medical transcriptionist (there is at least one on these forums - he mentioned that is what he does). This might be more what you are looking for as there are no start-up fees but you have to do some training.

I hope these give you both (at least the two who have asked so far) some ideas.

I work from home as a medical transcriptionist, although I’m not the one mentioned by Brenda V. Starting as a medical transcriptionist does involve some expenditures. In addition to training, you need reference resources, even in the internet age. Additional possible requirements (depending on the work situation) may include a computer, specialized software including a text expander and medical spell-checker, high-speed internet or unlimited long distance service, and a wave pedal or transcription station such as Lanier or Dictaphone. Some companies may provide some or all of these for full-time employees.

If this is something you are interested in, please research training programs carefully. There are good schools that let you train at home, and there are not-so-reputable schools whose graduates have difficulty finding work, so do your research if you choose to explore medical transcription. Whatever training you choose, you would need to complete it before seeking employment.

If you are interested and would like more specific recommendations regarding training programs or have specific questions about working as an MT, please feel free to PM me.

Good luck to you, and God bless. Also, as mentioned earlier in the thread, please do not allow your self-worth to become bound to your work life. You are much more than any job you could ever do.

Suzie
