for example a person would apply for a job. he’s catholic. what if the company he’s applying to has some immoral activities against Church teaching? should he push through if he gets accepted?

How many steps removed from the immoral act are they?

Some would be an obvious no-no (let’s say, doing graphic design on a gay lifestyle magazine), and some would be more ambigious (like, reparing computers for the publishing house that prints that magazine).

How’s about my situation: I made my way up the ladder in the video games industry before I came back to the Church 2 years ago.

Most of my career has been pretty “clean” - working on fairly, morally “okay” games and even some good ones for kids – so I was never really concerned with it.

However, my question is twofold:
1 - if the company I work for puts out some rather violent games (though they are appropriately rated M for Mature) and some games wherein players play as the bad guy, what is my responsibility there? Do you think I need to find a company that only does family games?

2 - I was recently assigned (through no choice of my own) to a couple of these morally questionable titles. It is in more of a supervisory role so I am not the one designing the game to be morally vapid and the game will still have to be rated appropriately. What is my responsibility there? (By the way, I do not think I can ask for another assignment so if I should get off these titles, I would have to change jobs.)

Just curious what people think. I am not happy about the changes but am wondering what are my moral duties here.

Thank you.

In your situation I don’t think you are causing any moral issues by working at a company that produces video games for mature audiences. Just like I don’t think you would be morally wrong for working at a company that produces guns or military weapons. The end user (or their parents) have the responsibility to use the product correctly. You cannot control the improper usage of the video game.such as by underage kids or for too many hours each day. If your company produced pornographic videos or drugs that had no healthy use then you would have a problem. It reminds me of a similar problem I had several years ago. I was working for a large stock brokerage firm and being new to the business I had very little income and few clients. I got a call from a man who wanted to invest some money. When I found out he ran a strip club I turned him down. I couldn’t morally invest money from him due to its source. It was legal but not moral in my opinion.

Pray for guidance and you will get it.
