I am in college for a degree in Medical Office Management. I have to do an internship to get my degree, but I am having a really hard time finding a doctor’s office to do an internship in where the doctor would not give out birth control(pills, etc.) I have applied at specialist offices, such as: cardiologist, podiatrist, radiologist, etc…, with no luck. I am running out of time and I don’t know if it would be morally exceptable to do an internship where I would possible have to deal with birth control issues. I also am in need of a full-time job with health insurance. Would it be ok to work in a doctor’s office where they deal with contraception until I was able to find something else?
What do you all think? Would it be ok to work for a short time at a doctor’s office where they deal with contraception. I would be dealing with Medical Coding(insurance filing), medical records, receptionist, etc… Thank you for your advice.

contraception is a legal medical procedure so it will be tough finding a place that doesn’t deal with it

But since you’re not the one writing the Rx, filling the bottles , or shallowing the pills I don’t think that you have a problem.

I tend to agree with Steve. If you have exhausted your options in terms of finding a non-contraceptive-accepting physician, sign on with one who is willing to work with you in insuring that YOU don’t ever have to prescribe said contraceptives.

I bet you can find one. A good intern is worth weight in gold, and a discerning MD (I would hope) would be willing to work with an “idiosyncrasy” or two in exchange for giving you all the hard work.😉

Good luck!

Check with your local diocese, I am sure they have a list of Catholic medical professionals whom you could approach for your internship.

I worked in a Catholic hospital where elective abortions, tubal ligations, and vesectomies were not performed.

Many Dr’s did hand out birth control pills, but they were not employee’s of the hospital.

My wife is a medical assistant working in a family practice were they do vasectomies and distribute birth control material. She told me that they are very understanding and allow her not to aide in the vasectomies or handle the birth control material. She graduates next year as an RN and we had a recent talk about birth control at a future job. She says she believes she could find a job in which she doesn’t have to deal with birth control. I hope she’s right. There’s no Catholic hospital in San Diego so that will make is alittle more difficult.

Scripps Mercy down on F Street is a Catholic Hospital, also check with your diocese, not all doctors work in a hospital, and they need nurses too.
