I’ve been out of work for a long time. I have an oppurtunity to get a job. It wont require me to miss mass on sunday, but it might require me to work on sunday. Is it mortal or venial to do work on sunday?

I’m really distraught. I don’t know if I can take this job or not. If it were MY judgement I’d take the job. Another part of me feels like, this is a test. Just wait, and a better job will come along. The lord will take care of me.

so…mortal or venial?

also…

If I smoke 2-3 cigarettes a week, is that something I need to stop doing? I’m trying to quit, but I have one in extreme moderation. I plan to quit. I’ve been being my own judge which is wrong, telling myself I don’t have to go to confession for it as long as I don’t smoke a pack. Moderation vs. excess.

is smoking cigarettes ok in moderation?

Nathan,

There have been times when I had to work on Sunday to support myself and children. I think you should take the job, find a mass to go to if at all possible, either before or after mass or even on Sat. evening. Maybe you can get a work schedule that you won’t have to work every Sunday. It is important for you to support yourself and God would want you to take the opportunity to be employed.

Is it a sin to smoke cigarettes? Sounds like you are trying to quit. The church has never said it was a sin to smoke, but it is certainly not good for your health. Confess this? probably not unless you think it is a sin… then confess it.

Good luck,

Love and Peace

You can certainly ask a priest for guidance on these issues but I believe it will not be a sin if you take the job that requires you to work on Sunday especially if it doesn’t prevent you from going to mass. There are many people (like those in the health care industry) who have to work on Sunday but who make sure they go to mass either on Saturday evening or Sunday morning. I surely believe that God does not want you to remain unemployed. If the job is a decent/moral job, I would consider it. At least it will get you back to work. If a better job comes along later, then all well and good.I also don’t think smoking is an actual sin. But it is obviously not healthy for you and also wastes money that could be used for greater things (helping with your bills while you aren’t working or it could be given to the church or a charity.) Perhaps you could ask your doctor for a Nicotine patch to help you stop smoking. They work pretty well for many people.

First, get the job and then when you are over the stress of beginning the new job start thinking about ending the smoking habit.

As a substitute for smoking, maybe you can find some kind of devotional to do instead…the Rosary, the Divine Mercy Chaplet, the Jesus prayer, reading a spiritual book, etc
Good luck. My prayers are with you. :tiphat:

if your job requires you to work sunday, how can it be a sin?
there are masses every day of the week. actually, there is not a moment somewhere in the world where mass is not being offered. 24/7. think about that. you can join the mass in your heart.

i think it is a good thing to observe a day of rest. whatever day you get off is your sabbath. the commandments are not so much for God as for us. He knows our needs.

don’t worry trust in God. as far as working on the sabbath. if is enjoyment, it is not work.
