I sometimes have to work on Sundays. I always attend Mass either at the Sat. vigil or Sunday Mass. I work in the hotel industry and people travel everyday of the week.
I wish I didn’t have to but I also know that God understands and knows what is in my heart. He is always on my mind.🙂

I work in the airline industry so it’s a 24/7 operation. We have rotating days off and sometimes shifts as well. I try my best but I still miss Mass on Sundays, Saturdays too.

Hello, I am a 17 years old and work at a local grocery store and they want me to work on sundays, I told them it was impossible for me to work till after 1(because of the divine liturgy of-course) and I was planning on making Sundays completely unavailable or trade in the shifts for that day, well since I just got hired i was told I would start on the 14th but after I came home from divine liturgy(All the Ukrainian catholic bishops were in the church, thousands of people, very nice place to be 🙂 ) I got a call saying I had a shift today and I was late…(I didn’t think i would be scheduled for a shift till the 14th of-course) so in fear of being fired I went and worked for the next 4 hours.

I have 3 questions now, Is what I did working on the sabbath sinful even if I made the time to fulfill the Holy obligation?

Also, If your job requires you to work on sundays is it sinful?

would any of these situations lead to mortal sin?

Thanks, and God Bless.
If it is serving the Lord (a good work) like firemen and doctors do you can work without violating the resting day. As Jesus says it is lawful to do good on the sabbath (Jewish word for resting day).

I think it might be possible to switch your day of rest to another day of the week but mass always must be gone to on Saturday evenings or Sundays. That can’t change.

Read PART THREE: LIFE IN CHRIST: SECTION TWO: THE TEN COMMANDMENTS: CHAPTER ONE: “YOU SHALL LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, AND WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND”: ARTICLE 3: THE THIRD COMMANDMENT in the Catechism of the Catholic Church, which Pope John Paul II called “a sure norm for teaching the faith” to get what the church believes about this in more detail here: scborromeo.org/ccc/p3s2c1a3.htm#2168

Excerpts: " 2184 Just as God "rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had done,"121 human life has a rhythm of work and rest. The institution of the Lord’s Day helps everyone enjoy adequate rest and leisure to cultivate their familial, cultural, social, and religious lives.122

2185 On Sundays and other holy days of obligation, the faithful are to refrain from engaging in work or activities that hinder the worship owed to God, the joy proper to the Lord’s Day, the performance of the works of mercy, and the appropriate relaxation of mind and body.123 Family needs or important social service can legitimately excuse from the obligation of Sunday rest. The faithful should see to it that legitimate excuses do not lead to habits prejudicial to religion, family life, and health.

2187 Sanctifying Sundays and holy days requires a common effort. Every Christian should avoid making unnecessary demands on others that would hinder them from observing the Lord’s Day. Traditional activities (sport, restaurants, etc.), and social necessities (public services, etc.), require some people to work on Sundays, but everyone should still take care to set aside sufficient time for leisure. With temperance and charity the faithful will see to it that they avoid the excesses and violence sometimes associated with popular leisure activities. In spite of economic constraints, public authorities should ensure citizens a time intended for rest and divine worship. Employers have a similar obligation toward their employees."
