I’ve developed a great weight training regiment in which I use a pre and post workout shake. I certainly don’t enjoy the stuff and my intention is certainly not to satisfy my hunger but at the same time the thought of drinking one sounds very good when I’m famished. It seems like this would count as a meal. Yes?

Drinks are not technically covered by the fasting requirement.

👍

Although they would break a fast for Holy Communion, beverages are not considered “food” for penitential purposes such as AW or Good Friday.

I have this from a very knowledgeable priest whom I trust wholeheadedly.

ICXC NIKA.

I am curious about the shakes. Are the pre and post workout ones the same? If not I would presume carb loading pre-workout and protein loading post-workout. Either way they are similar to meals.

Yes. Carbs/protein. In a nursing home the puree concoctions with less flavor and value were called a sufficient meal for the residents that couldn’t chew so if consistency were the measuring stick of a meal then those residents fasted for years.

In my mind I think it would be different because it’s intended use is medicinal but possibly that wouldn’t matter because it’s not necessary for basic wellness.

I was hoping somebody would give me a convincing argument but I think I’ll just skip the gym on fast days so I don’t feel weird about it.

Skipping the gym on fast days sounds like the safest bet. Doing the gym would be the same as choosing to do manual labor so not needing to fast.

Please show this is true by quoting an official source.
It is true. There are more days of abstinence (every Friday of lent) but only two fasting days which is two small meals and one full meal. Abstinence is no meat, but other than that you are free to eat what you want.
