Having been reading G.K. Chesterton’s “The Everlasting Man,” I’m becoming painfully aware of how limited my knowledge of world history is. I actually did reasonably well in history in my school days, but I’m beginning to think they must not have been setting the bar high enough.

Anyway, can anyone recommend any good resources for becomiing more generally knowledgable of world history and, while we’re at it, the history of the Church?

I’ve gotten a good education in history from my Catholic School: Seton Home Study School.

Christ the King, Lord of History was good.

I would highly recommend pretty much everything by Henry Daniel-Rops, particularly “Israel and the Ancient World”, “Jesus and His Times”, “The Church in the Dark Ages”, “Crusade and cathedral”, “Protestant Reformation”, “Catholic reformation” etc. In fact, I’m surpised nobody has mentioned him on this forum as yet. Unfortunately available only in second-hand bookshops, in second-hand section of amazon and abebooks, BTW you can check some reviews on amazon. I wish all these books were re-published. Every volume is a fascinating read, brilliantly written and fully orthodox:)

**The Rise of the West: A History of the Human Community **is a book by Canadian and University of Chicago historian William H. McNeill, first published in 1963 and enlarged with a retrospective preface in 1991 (University of Chicago Press, 1992). Its first edition won the U.S. National Book Award in History and Biography in 1964[1] and it was named one of the 100 Best Nonfiction Books of the 20th century by the Modern Library.[2]

I haven’t read it but I heard that Professor McNeill taught Western Civilization at the University of Chicago for years.

You might be able to find it at a public library.

Don’t overlook the works of Howard Zinn, if you want to balance out your perspective. You would think that history would be facts. It is much more than that. It is WHICH facts are considered, and how they are interpreted.

Yeah and you can add Das Capital to your reading list while your at it. I had to read his book in American History. Its pretty obvious that this guy has something really big against The U.S.A., white people and Christianity.

If you love America, don’t hate white people and are a Christian I would recommend “A Patriot’s History of the United States”
