Hello CAF!

I’m going to WYD this summer in Poland with a whole bunch of friends that I haven’t seen in such a long time and frankly I am super stoked for it. I really want to get the most out of this WYD and make it more of a spiritual journey as opposed to just a fun trip with friends. I say this because I went on a pilgrimage to Lourdes and Rome and I found that I didn’t get that much out of it perhaps because I didn’t prepare well beforehand.

It is for this reason that I have come to the conclusion that a successful and edifying WYD will only come if I prepare myself and have a quasi Lent before I set off.

So my question for all you guys, especially for those who have gone to WYD and know what it’s like and know what to expect (by the way this will be my WYD), what can I do to prepare and what can I do during WYD to make it an awesome experience?

Thanks!

I take it that by this you mean that you expect it is the one chance for you to go?

In which case, you definitely need to prepare. Your idea of “quasi Lent” is a good one.

Take on some penances. As with genuine Lent, there are three areas: Bodily self denial; prayer; and charity.

If you can, and aren’t already doing so, take on daily Mass.

Read up on saints who lived or died in the area. Sts. JP2, Maximilian Kolbe and Edith Stein come to mind.

When you are there, try to be part of as many “spiritual” events as possible with the youths of the world. Remember, though, you are with a group, so your time is not per se your own.

And it is, after all, a summer European trip. So don’t forget to have some fun!

I agree fully! Take this time before you go on your trip to really engage with the Church’s daily activities. Go to daily Mass as much as possible, pray the Rosary daily, pray the Liturgy of the Hours to the best of your ability. Also, find some nice literature, wither the Bible itself or some meditations from the saints, and edify yourself with some spiritual reading.

May God bless you as you attend World Youth Day! 🙂

P.S. I think he meant to say that it was his “first WYD” 😃
