Common notions of freedom today are mostly political: democracy, free speech, free markets, free thinking, freedom of religion…etc. These are worldly freedoms.

What does it mean to “take up one’s cross and follow Christ” while living in a world where worldly freedoms are the battle cry?

It means different things for different people.

For the young man, it may mean steiving to live purely in a society that shows lust as true love, and true love as antiquated.

For the parent, it may mean working long hours or a second job in order to send your children to a Catholic school, or in order to tithe more fully to your parish.

For the invalid who is in comtinual pain, it may mean offering up your loneliness and pain for the salvation of souls or those in Purgatory.

We are all different, and all have different crosses as a result.
