My wife and I have been married several years now, but I’m finding it increasingly difficult to see a future for our marriage. She is very lazy – will do very little of the housework, maybe taking care of getting the kids dressed or giving them baths, or cooking once a week, but she doesn’t even want to do this much a lot of the time. I do most everything else around the house – cooking, laundry, house maintenance, mowing the grass, grocery shopping, most of the cleaning, dropping off the kids, picking up the kids, you name it, I more than likely do it. When she comes home from work, she sits on the couch and plays on Facebook or some other site for hours, until it’s bedtime. Lately, she has been increasingly involved with stuff at our parish, to the point where she is meeting there two to three times a week, or more, with this program and that program. This burns me, because why should she spend all her time and energy on the parish and almost none at home? I could understand it if she was single, or even if we were married and had no children, but her responsibility is to her family, first and foremost. Yet, she lives under this weird delusion that the household would fall apart without her efforts (she has literally said this to me).

We’ve fought some over this before. I’ve tried to get her to do more around the house, and she might for a little while after a fight, but she goes back to pretty much just being a slug. Worse, she won’t even do stuff for herself – she had our young daughter plug in her laptop cord the other day because she didn’t want to get up and do it! Tonight, she started giving me grief about not giving our son his bath early, so she didn’t have to do both of them. This was after I cooked tonight, did some laundry, the usual stuff, and she sat down to start writing up something for one of the programs she’s part of (which could have waited until the kids were in bed). I finally snapped and said “I guess your church program is more important than taking care of your kids.” After this, she verbally tore into me, calling me a mother------ in front of our kids, the biggest jerk and worst person she’d ever met, and so on.

There are also issues with the way she acts towards me and I have brought this up with her before. To wit, she is downright rude to me a lot of the time – for example, she will talk on the phone for 45 minutes in the car if it’s just our family, but if I call her when she’s in the car with someone else, I’ll get maybe thirty seconds because “she doesn’t want to be rude to the people she is with.” She tries to be controlling and bossy with me around other people, to the point where it seems like it becomes a power trip with her to make me do things, especially things she could do herself – basically playing “big (wo)man” around her friends and family. If I refuse, she gets nasty about things with me for a while.

I don’t really know what the point of our marriage is, anymore. I can accept “dying to self” all day long – I work a difficult job and make a decent living, and am happy to sacrifice for my family. I don’t need love, and I don’t need self-esteem. I just don’t know what I’m doing here at this point. I’ve “gamed out” separation in my head – I don’t need a lot to live on and could probably get by on maybe 1/5 of what I make, if even that much, giving the rest to my wife and children. I am concerned about the future of our children, but don’t really know how much good it is going to do them to have them grow up and see how my wife acts, especially toward me and toward her responsibilities.

I think tonight was the breaking point for our marriage – I pretty much expect her to ask for a separation tomorrow, if not a divorce (she has done so in the past, but I have always played peacemaker). I really don’t even know what to think about things at this point, at all, but only know I’m tired of this cycle. I don’t even feel upset by this point, don’t feel much at all. I mean, I’m not a saint by any means, but I’m just at a loss by this point to even know what to feel or do.

I can’t really offer any intelligent suggestions other than that her behaviour is unacceptable and I can’t really see her as not having some serious personality issues. Especially the way she reacted with disproportionate and vulgar verbal abuse in front of the children is quite telling. Perhaps she’s reenacting some scenarios known to her from a turbulent childhood or perhaps nobody put limits on her when she was growing up, this is hard to say. But whatever it is, it’s probably classified as a disorder, perhaps something to do with avoidance or with a pathological need for independence, but definitely anger control issues. Anyway, I don’t feel up to the guessing game.

From a more theological POV, your marriage has a future until one of you dies. It’s a common perception, even among orthodox, observant Catholics, that a marriage dies or stops when something like that happens. Human bonds of affection or respect may die or even any relationship may virtually cease but marriage just can’t (the sacrament is marriage, not just a ritual side thrown on top that mostly only comes to surface when remarriage is talked about). That perspective perhaps creates a temptation to throw it away rather than fixing it or at least undermines motivation to keep fixing.

And sorry to hear about your awful situation. Saying my prayers for you.

It breaks my heart that a good man, good bread-winner. good family man who loves his children is matched with a problematic woman. My father was a manipulative bully all his pathetic life and my mom stuck to him like glue, submissive and all. All I can offer you is my deepest, heart-felt sympathy. Did she reveal her true colour when you had the knot tied around the neck?

My heart aches for you. And I am so sorry your sweet children had to hear their mother speak like that to you, their father, her husband. It us an awful example to set. 😦 You are in my prayers.

She sounds severely depressed and unhappy. Perhaps her parish activities takes her mind off her personal issues. I unfortunately don’t have any advice, other than to seek counseling.

I am too sadden to hear your story. I have been married for 10 years going on 11 years, and it hasnt gotten any better. Your story sounds similar to mine, however, its the other way around. I have 3 kids ne from a previous relationship and 2 with my husband and one on the way. Its unfortunate that we are this far into the relationship and things are not getting better. To make matters worse my husband has a real issue with pornography which is disgusting and he has promised me he will stop but I discovered a couple days ago he hasnt, not to mention he twitters disgusting comments about such, and he makes comments on twitter criticizing me. No he is not aware I know about this, and I am not sure how to approach him with my findings. I feel he has broken the trust, not to mention he criticizes me as well for speaking kind words given to us by our lord Christ. My post can go on forever, however i feel the same way you, and i am in total depression. I want to cry all the time now. Not to mention I almost feel like not doing anything, but Jesus keeps me going. I pray for my husband and our marriage. But honestly I feel a separation is long over due. Not to mention even when I feel the way I do, I continue trying to do my day to day chores. Its not easy as he makes a mess and cleans up as he pleases. It is totally tiring and discouraging. i also talk to god and ask him for wisdom and guidance. Last night as a matter of fact I was so depressed and I asked God, to guide me and let it be his will, and to help me find the answer, I opened up the bible and Psalm 119 was the words of comfort he gave me. I cried some more, because it was beautiful and hard to accept. Its like he says everything has an end, just follow his commandements and he will never leave you. I will pray for you and your family, as I agree with you what kind of and example are we showing our kids if we allow our spouse to mistreat us and the marriage. Those are the thoughts that come across to me as well. I will tell you this, My daughter out of the blue also mentioned to me there were kids at her school with stepparents, and i asked her how would that make her feel, if she were in there shoes, she said sad, i asked alittle or alot, and she said alot mommy that is sad. It really hurts me to hear her say that especially since I am considering separation. Again I am in the same place as yourself and totally understand the sacrifice you are doing to maintain your family. I would definetly speak with your local priest and see what his thoughts are…Maybe you can share with me and bring more ease to my situation as well. God be with you and your family, and may God grant your wife wisdom to understand her true teachings and church starts at home…

Been there, done that! From your discription, it sounds like your wife is either clinically depressed or is horribly immature and selfish. Either way, you both need help.
I strongly suggest that you make an appointment with your Pastor and drag her with you to the appointment. Discuss the situation with him and get a referral to a Catholic Marriage Counsellor, and possibly a Psychiatric or Psychological Counsellor for your wife.
I also suggest that you get yourself an attorney as soon as possible. Whether or not you end of in Domestic Relations Court or not, you should protect yourself in advance.
Men who are not prepared for this sort of thing not only get hurt financially, many of them get ruined, as even in this enlightened era, courts tend to favor the woman, especially when minor children are involved…no matter how slatternly and slovenly she may be!
And for those of you who will get on my back for this, It took me almost 20 years to get out from under… My ex sued me every time she broke up with her boyfriend at that time…and I was sued to pay for my sons college education, even though they both had full scholarships! When the case got thrown out of court, she tried to turn my sons against me by saying that I didn’t care enough for them to pay for their education. I was lucky that the courts finally saw her pattern of harassment.

First, don’t forget or feel Christ and Blessed Virgin Mary can’t change your marriage…faith and hope…in their power…wrapped in charity…are critical keys for both of you…and if you pray alone for this transformation to take place…you will be heard and answered. I recommend and encourage the Rosary daily…and maybe a prayer devotion that your wife likes/does so that you can do it with her…any kind of prayerful activity–especially going to Mass together–you can do together will really relieve the stress and start breaking down the barriers in your relationship.

Second, as others have posted…your wife sounds very despondent or maybe depressed…she sounds like she is really afraid of something…she needs help to get to the root of her disposition. Maybe she would be willing to discuss it with a priest or better yet a deacon…someone she can bare her innermost feelings to …be totally honest…and not be afraid. Also, both of you need to seek marriage counseling…and if she is active in the parish…ask her to sit in front of the Blessed Sacrament and see if the Lord wants her to work on her marriage…sit with her if she is open to doing it together.

Lastly let her read this from Blessed Virgin Mary at Fatima:
In August of 1917 Our Lady told the children, “pray much and make sacrifices for sinners, for many souls go to hell because there is no one to make sacrifices for them.” As to the kinds of sacrifices Our Lady was asking, she revealed to Sr. Lucia on one occasion: “The good Lord is allowing Himself to be appeased . . . but He Himself complains most bitterly and sorrowfully about the small number of souls in His grace who are willing to renounce whatever the observance of His laws requires of them.”
"Many persons," Sr. Lucia explained, "feeling that the word penance implies great austerities, and not feeling that they have the strength for great sacrifices, become discouraged and continue a life of lukewarmness and sin." Then **she said Our Lord explained to her: **"**The sacrifice required of every person is the fulfillment of his duties in life **and the observance of My law. This is the penance that I now seek and require."

Prayers for you and your wife…

Your post brought tears to my eyes. I hate it when people take a good spouse for granted. Please protect yourself in advance, for your sake and your beautiful children’s sakes. If she were to make good on her promise, you need to get some advice from an attorney. As the only stable parent, your kids will need you. I agree with the others that your wife seems very depressed. There’s obviously some issues going on for her to unleash on you in that manner especially in front of your kids. She desperately needs help, but unfortunately she needs to acknowledge that and get help in order for real change to occur.

I’m praying for you and your marriage!

God Bless you!

I really don’t even know what to do.I’m just at a loss by this point to even know what to feel or do.
I am so sorry for you. My prayers go out to you. I feel like I am hearing of this more and more; I have three male friends for whom this is happening or has happened. All would tell you, get a lawyer. If she can see her way to anything of hope regarding the marriage, she should see a professional. Realize that she may not recognize her issues, though. Get a lawyer.
One friend’s marriage ended in divorce. That’s when his friends opened up a bit. (Not saying they should have, but…) “Man, she’s always angry or depressed. Controlling, holding you in disregard. She shouldn’t insult you like that. It’s as if she is only happy if she is miserable and making others miserable, too.”
Maybe she was and couldn’t bear to admit it.
I will pray that you get through this with His help. II will pray for her to open up if there is a deeper cause.

I am very sorry that you are suffering so much. You have been given good advice here about talking to a priest, counselor, and even a lawyer. Your family needs help and prayer. Praying for you today.

Sorry to hear you are suffering especially since there are children invovled.I think George’s advice was good.Go to your pastor and talk to him about marriage counseling and maybe even talk to an attorney too if it comes to that.
Lots of women want good men like you but somehow they never seem to match up.

Good thing I’m not you.If I was and she mouthed off at me I would problably tell her the reason she spends so much time at church with programs is because she can’t keep her legs closedyeah that’s right wifey who is he or she?

Know that’s not nice but if i was married and had a husband that acted like her wouldn’t put up with it Guess I’m too picky .
You need to do what’s best for those children and yourself.
Do you have any contact with her side of the family? maybe there is some woman on either side who might talk some sense into her though she might not listen. All we can do is pray for you and your little ones that Our Mother Mary makes her somehow see the light and she realizes what she has before it disappears forever.

I am concerned about the future of our children
Go see your priest, many parish has fantastic counseling.

Seem that you wife has some sort of addiction with electronic. Internet, can be so toxic, if you aren’t careful.

Please pray Mother Mary and St-Joseph. Nothing good can come from this divorce. If you separate, who will take care of your children when you aren’t there. You must hold on for their sake, at least when they are old enough. Not to count that it will be visitation now, do you really want this. When you are married and have children, you cannot ever divorce your spouse, they will always be part of your life that you like it or not.

Anyway, that you could go for a little vacation.

It seems appealing to divorce, but it isn’t worth it. You must go see a counselor. I would go with the church. Please pray!

I pray for you!

All the counseling in the world probably won’t help your wife from what you are saying. She has checked out of the role of wife and mother.

Perhaps a trial separation is needed? Make sure you put the kids first. They didn’t ask to be born.

Thanks to all of you for the advice and prayers. I have been praying about the situation and things have cooled down for the moment. It doesn’t mean that any of the underlying issues are resolved, but I want to make sure our children are okay, first and foremost, and having their parents arguing is not helpful. I can deal with things for their sake, no problem. I don’t intend to seek a divorce, and would only point out that I can’t control her intentions.

Thanks again for the prayers and support. It means a great deal right now.
