This thread is inspired by the discussion of “Here Comes the Bride”. What do think would be (or you have actually heard) the worst Funeral song ever?

I had heard once on the radio a gall say her MIL asked for “Ding dong the witch is dead” to be played at her funeral.

Any others?

Really? You think? hmmm, it is actually my fav for a funeral. Funny how opinions can very so.

:rotfl: That sounds like something my DMIL would ask for!! HAHA!! She has already told us that she wants to be buried on a corner lot by the highway so we can throw flowers at her on our way down the road and that she wants anything that says “MOM” to be turned upside down so it says “WOW” HAHA!

True. My “fav” for a funeral is Dies Irae.

I with you 100% on that one!! My sister and I have made a vow that when one of us dies the other must now allow that song to be sung.

I alway kind of jokingly say I want “Spirit in the Sky” played when they’re carrying my casket out of the church. I don’t think that will fly with the priest, though. I think it would be a hoot, but then that’s hardly the point of a funeral.

I’d say 80% of the funeral liturgies around here use the following song list:

Eagles Wings
Amazing Grace
Be Not Afraid
How Great thou Art

With some degree of change in the order. This is at the request of the families, because my DH (the music director) would NOT play these songs if he had the choice.

Talk about a life of penance!

This really saddens me as I had all of the above sung at my husband’s funeral and, at my request. I guess I’m not in the know then. These songs were very comforting to me and my family.😦

OK…showing my ignorance…what is wrong with these? Is it the literal phrase…

I told my fiance that when I kick the bucket I want Amazing Grace played, but with a bagpipe. Always thought Magic Carpet Ride would be kinda funny to hear at a funeral.

I cannot believe people are calling these the worst funeral songs ever. Maybe it is because they have heard them many times and want something more original? Well, these songs didn’t get picked for funerals over and over again because people didn’t like them. Obviously, these are great, traditional, and inspiring songs, and I would be honored if they were played at my funeral one day.

On a lighter note, I think it would be hilarious if people sang songs at a funeral with thanksgiving being the theme (not the turkey Thanksgiving, but giving thanks, like “Thanks be to God”).

I think “Leaving on a Jet Plane” would be funny at a wake (when it’s more okay to laugh as well as cry). But for the funeral, I’d personally like “Abide With Me.”

Hopefully, I won’t be dying at any time soon, however, I have decided that I want Amazing Grace, played with bagpipes, at my funeral, along with a song I learned at a youth conference, called Press On.

The chorus to Press On goes like this:
So as for me I will press on in running the race
With my eyes fixed on Jesus Who inspires and perfects my faith
I will fight the good fight will all my heart and soul
til the day that I’m with Jesus, the day I’m finally home,
the day that I have won the crown.

If I remember the rest or find them online, I’ll post them, because it’s a great song.
