Hello there,
I am in a rather sad predicament and need some guidance/information.
I am a baptized catholic (albeit not very devout) who married a non baptized hindu woman in secret civil ceremony just over two years ago.
Unfortunately we have been having some seemingly insurmountable problems mainly due to significant cultural differences and expectations,
I have not made any final decision on the situation but I feel I have made a monumental mistake.
I am aware that the marriage is not perceived as valid in the eyes of the catholic church so what would the church say about a civil divorce in this situation? Would it be be permitted? Would I be allowed to remarry?
Please let me know your thoughts.
Kind regards,
Ricky

Hi,

Since the Catholic Church does not recognize your marriage as valid, it certainly would not be opposed to your getting a divorce. You would be able to marry in the Catholic Church, after you diocese’s marriage tribunal objectively determines that your marital situation is as you have described it to be.

After you no longer have marital relations, you may go to Confession and again receive Holy Communion. You are in our prayers.
