Would this be considered a sin?

This is regarding The Sabbath Day.

I know it is a day of relaxation, and to attend Mass. I have no intention of missing mass. I usually don’t go out for my age…rarely. What I do like to go to are shows at small venues, and occasionally big concerts…biggest one being “Winter Jam”, a Christian tour. There is a show coming up, April first at the downtown youth center, and it is a band. I am wondering if it is a sin to attend. The band through their music talks about “The Prodigal Son” and other Biblical stories, according to their interviews and you can hear it in music. They necessarily do not share the same views on religion as me or the Church, i say this because i saw one of the guys wearing a “religion free” vest. But they still follow and there is biblical principals behind it. This doesn’t mean i’m going to leave my Catholic faith, i understand others don’t have the same views as us. I’m wondering whether it is a sin to go. I’m not going to crowd surf or anything, just sing along and have fun. This to me would be relaxing rather than sit at home, and since they have positive messages, why not go.
During the week i stay home at watch the house because everyone works or goes to school. I graduated and am not Beginning college due to money issues. So, these things are kind of like an outlet i look forward to, and i am going with my sister…

Talk to your priest about it and he will guide you on whether or not it is prudent to go.

No, it is not a sin, and moreover it is a good way to entertain yourself on Sunday.

There seem to be two issues here.

Firstly, is it permissible to do go to any entertainment like this on a Sunday? The answer is definitely yes. Any form of healthy recreation or entertainment is permissible on a Sunday, and is encouraged.

Secondly, is it permissible to go to a religious performance by a non-Catholic Christian? Again, yes. If the performance were anti-Catholic, then you should stay away, otherwise you are permitted to go. If this were not the case, then Catholics would be advised to stay away from the music of Bach, Purcell, and Handel, the writings of C. S. Lewis and William Blake, the art of Rembrandt, the plays of Shakespeare, etc, etc. etc…

We sing hymns by Protestants in Catholic churches!

You did well to spot the “religion free” vest! That does seem to be a bit of an issue, but keep it in context. These guys are young.

I watched your video and they were not to my taste - but they may be just my age. As a general answer, you are certainly permitted to go to a concert on Sunday. Whether it’s wise to a attend a concert by a particular Protestant musician would depend on whether, and how much, his particular message is contrary to Catholicism - and that’s usually a decision you will have to make for yourself.

Catholics have for centuries enjoyed the music of Bach, Handel and Tallis, the writings of C. S. Lewis and William Blank, the plays of Shakespeare, the art of Rembrandt and Druruer, etc. (all Protestants). We sing many hymns by Protestants in Catholic churches.

Don’t get too uptight about it.
