Would this be considered stealing?

I signed a two year contract with a cell phone provider through my employer to get a discounted rate. Nine months into the contract I was laid off. Through procrastination I did not notify the carrier of the chnage in my employment status. Is this a sin?
 
No. You have a contract for two years. Unless that contract says you are supposed to terminate or that it is terminated upon leaving your job, you are not doing anything wrong but living out the contract you agreed to.

I agree with Liza.

Now, if you go in there to renew your contract and lie to them about still being employed there, that would be a different story. But for now I think you’re okay. 😉
 
I thought the cell phone plans periodically would inquire if somebody was still employed to confirm that the discount was still valid.

I think that using a discount to which you are not entitled is a form of stealing. It doesn’t become stealing once the cell phone company asks if you still work there. It doesn’t become stealing once the company tells the cell phone company you don’t work there any longer. It’s stealing once you left the company and never told them.

Many stores will not let you use an expired coupon for things. If you tried to use an expired coupon and only paid the difference and ran out the store I’m sure the police would be called on you. I doubt they’d be sympathetic to your story either.

People have been arrested for sitting in cars outside of coffee shops and using their “free” high speed access.

If you notified them and the discount still appeared then it might be a different story. But as of now you are using a discount to which you are not entitled.

Thanks. I wouldn’t have thought it was illegal to do that. I found it interesting that the guy who got arrested, the store owner, and even the police officer did not realize it was illegal until they looked into it. At least, it’s illegal in some states.

I guess that’s good to know not to do that!
