One of my fellow teachers here, where I teach, is very openly gay. Her and I get along very well despite the fact I am both a conservative republican and a practicing Catholic. Last week the state somehow leagally recognized her “relationship” and our staff threw a party. I chose not to go. However, I had considered buying her a gift. Would that be scandal?

My opinion would be that Jesus said to love everyone, and it iss not our place to judge. Even though you don’t agree with that person’s beliefs, you can still be glad they are happy and pray for them.

It is indeed a fine line between being perceived as supporting a blief that you don’t, and being judgmental…

If you do something or create a circumstance that puts another in an environment that will contain within it the temptation to sin, you have caused scandal.

If there is anyone you can think of that may be tempted to morally accept homosexuality because you are giving this gift the answer is yes.

I wouldn’t go, or buy a gift, but it’s your prerogative.

I’m not really fond of those WWJD braclets but this seems like a case to ask that question. I don’t think he would go or buy them a gift but he would pray for them to follow his commandments.

What would your motive be for buying her a gift? Since it would obviously be related to her recent “union”, the gift would probably be interpreted as your tacit approval of it. Since you do not approve, unless you have another reason for giving it which can be made clear, I think it would be a scandal.

I think buying a gift would show approval. Also, what do you have in mind as a gift?

Hmm, would one also buy a gift for an adult pedophile who was allowed to marry his boy lover? Equal rights for all.

I would think buying a gift shows approval. Perhaps a prayer card or having a mass said?
