I think I’d be irked to find you missed a friend’s housewarming on my account, when I had not asked for any such thing. My MIL would want us to move her celebration by a night, so we could do both.

The OP may be in the position that she irks Dad if she does one thing and irks Mom if she does another…welcome to the 3-generation household!

When we told my parents that we received the invitation, my mom’s response was, “well, we’d better get one too! We helped them clean that place up!”. Then she finds out what day it is scheduled on and suddenly had no interest.

I am sort of afraid of offending her over this. Last year my dad accidentally bought her the wrong kind of cake, and she complained about it for months after that, acting hike he’d gone out of his way to get the wrong one. So part of me thinks it might be better to just go with her wishes without any complaint whatsoever, but the other part thinks she’s just being overly clingy again. Parents need an owners’ manual, lol.
