Would this Philosophy course and the text that goes with it be okay to take?

I plan on regitering at a state university this semester. I would really like to take a Philosophy course because I understand something that Priests take many classes in and I would be interested in learning more. I’m not going to a seminary, because I’m married 🙂 but I would like to take electives when possible to help deepen my faith. The Philosophy course that is offered uses the following text: Joel Feinberg and Russ Shafer-Landau. Reason and Responsibility: Readings in Some Basic Problems of Philosophy. 12th edition. Belmont, CA: Wadsworth, 2005. ISBN: 0534625541 Would this be a good course to take? Any other recommendations for electives for a business major who wishes to conincide career and faith?

Dear Aug,

You are not likely to find much in the way of philosophy at a state college or any other non-Catholic college. Even most Catholic colleges and universities have dubious philosophy departments if they have any at all. If there is a seminary in your area, you might be able to take a course or two there as a layman. If you live near Thomas Aquinas College, the University of Dallas, Magdalene College, Ave Maria University and the like, you might be able to take a course from one of these.

Fr. Vincent Serpa, O.P.
