Would you compromise?

My husband was able to retire from a 20 year law enforcement career without compromising his Christian morals.
Often times during those 20 years I would worry more that he might be called to remove abortion protesters from a sidewalk than a fugitive carrying a gun in a dark alley.
I prayed that he would never feel pressure to compromise his soul while on the job.
As evil becomes more legal in our society and we face daunting questions which could mean losing employment I was wondering how many have considered what they would do if faced to choose between ‘right’ - no job and ‘wrong’ - keep my job.

Teachers?
Lawyers?
Police?
Government workers?
Factory workers?
Doctors?
Healthcare workers?
All workers?

What do you see? How great is the pressure getting? Are you prepared to face the harshness of losing employment rather than lose your soul?

I am a law student currently getting experience as an English teacher. You never know what happens and when you have to make the right but tough decision. Congrats and deep respect for your husband. If we had more such people in the law enforcement…

I work in technology. Previous employers (even Catholic ones!) have asked me to do actions that are contrary to state and federal laws. I will not voliate just laws–I will not be coerced into sin by an employer. They have always understood my reticence, and either did not go forward with the action, or used someone else instead. That’s one of the reasons I no longer work for those organizations.

In my current job, I build directories for other companies/organizations. My employer already knows that if a project comes up that is against my morals, I will not take part. The specific example I gave him was if Planned Parenthood wanted us to work on a directory of abortion providers. If it came down to a matter of do the directory or lose my job, I’d lose my job, then promptly notify the Thomas More Law Center so we can go about taking action against the company. After talking to my supervisor, and conversations with my CEO, I don’t see that ever taking place, though. While I do not know what faith, if any, my CEO is, he has spoken several times of doing the morally right thing. He specifically said on one occasion that he would never ask someone to do something against their morals. I think I have a great employer to work for, and I should never be asked to compromise anything for my job.

I have noticed overall, though, a laxing of morals among coworkers over the past decade. They don’t think anything’s wrong with pirating software, music, dvd’s, etc. Even some people on these forums see nothing wrong with such immoral and illegal activity. It’s a slippery slope, though–once you give the Devil a way in, he’ll hook his claws in you.
