Would you continue to ignore her?

I just found out my sister is getting a divorce. When she told me, I told her that divorce is hard, it’s like a death and if there is any way to avoid it to not do it. Well, she is going through with it and I understand her reasoning and I support her decision because she is my sister.

So, her husband calls her mother (my step mother - she’s actually my step sister but she and I are very close) and cries to my stepmother about the divorce. THis is the first the mom has heard about any of this. The mom has never liked my sister’s husband and she and i had decided not to tell her right now because of fear that her reaction would be happiness and that’s not what we wanted to hear.

So, stepmom sends me an email telling me that BIL called her crying about the divorce and said that I was the only one who knew and she wanted me to tell her what I knew. She also said that she was scared that is might be some sick joke BIL was playing. I showed this email to my sister the second I saw it. I did that because I was mad that stepmom was basically going behind my sister’s back asking me what was going on. It’s kind of like gossiping. I should add that I have a bad history with my stepmother and although she and I get along now, there was a time in my life when she ignored me and wouldn’t talk to me. She spread lies about me to the family (yes, I have proof of this) and caused everyone to not talk to me for about 10 years. We are all back together now but that issue has never been resolved. But because of that I will never trust my stepmom again.

But back to the current issue. Why would she ask me about something that serious that is about my sister? Why not go straight to the source…my sister. Why would she think BIL would lie about something like that? Why would he feign crying about something like that? I should add that stepmom does have a habit of talking about people behind their backs all the time, even her best friends. She makes it sound as if she’s concerned about them but…

So, now I have been ignoring my stepmom because I don’t want to talk to her about it. I am not going to talk about my sister’s divorce with her because that’s my sister’s job. If stepmom wants to know something, she can ask my sister. My sister said she would talk to stepmom when she was ready and I respect that. So until then I keep ignoring emails and phone calls. And to be honest, it doesn’t bug me one iota not to talk to stepmom. But would you do the same? What would you do?

Should you continue to ignore her? That depends. Have you already told her that you will not discuss this with her?

If not, then let her know.

Once she knows your position then ignore any further inquiries.

Your best bet is to email her back stating that it is not your place to discuss your sisters situation with her and that she should contact her daughter for any information regarding your sisters marriage, and leave it at that.

Yeah, I should say that but I am so mad that she asked me in the first place that I needed to take a step back before I said something I shouldn’t have. Also, I am still appalled she would ask me. She is an adult, she should know better.

And I have found out that my sister has talked to them. Funny thing is I haven’t heard from her since my sister talked to them. I guess it’s not as fun to talk behind her back now.

I am just tired of the family drama. Is there such thing as a family without the drama?

If your sister has spoken to them then there is no need for action. Yes, there are families that do not have this kind of drama. But no, we are not fortunate enough to have that kind of family, as my in-laws would be certifiable if they would go to a psychiatrist. Working for one I can say that my MIL is on the wrong meds.

Good luck and congrats on being able to take a step back and have this resolve on its own.
