If you heard people who appeared to be born “Irish Catholic” having a private conversation at a Starbucks or something like, but mis-representing the Catholic history, etc.

Would you interrupt?

This happened to me today, and I was conflicted about saying something or not. Especially, since it was a private conversation between 3 friends.

What would you have done?

I voted “depends”.
There are many misconceptions among many Catholics even, and I would have to gauge if the people were friendly enough to want to continue the conversation with a virtual stranger.
I would be tempted to correct, but then. I’m a DRE, so it’s kind of my “thing”. 🤷

It would also depend on whether what you heard was eavesdropping, or they were speaking so loudly that everyone in the place :blush:could hear. If you could catch their eye and they asked your opinion because they knew you heard them, fire away. Otherwise, it’s really none of your business.

No, I wouldn’t normally interrupt someone else’s conversation.

The only time that I have done that is to say “hi” to friends that I have seen if they have just happened to be at the same place that we have been at, at the same time, in order to greet them and their family members.

I don’t normally pay attention to what other people are saying, because I’m usually talking to my husband when we’re out eating together at a restaurant. 🙂

Private and not your business, Bite your tongue time…Not easy… but good discipline 👍

In the bad old days, I was one of those who spread misinformation about the Catholic faith. Someone probably heard and prayed for me. Well it worked.

Just pray for them.

If it’s in a Starbucks, which is a PUBLIC place, then the conversation’s PUBLIC. Period.

They made it your business by talking so loud that you can hear them, so yes, if you’re inclined to interrupt them, then by all means, do so.

I have though been appealed to when seen to be interested in a conversation…

Nope. Not any of your business. Particularly if you were eavesdropping and it’s clear they were not talking to you.

Nope, nope nope nope nope.

This is an excellent way to have people despise you (which is going to make what you say seem very unappealing even if it’s true.)

Not only will they despise you they will also despise the Catholic faith.

Right.

I’ve never had someone butt in to “correct” me and thought afterwards, “Wow, I’m really glad they did that.” (Admittedly, I’ve never had someone do it and actually be right, either.)

I say a prayer instead when I hear such misinformation being spread.

Well, I did it a couple of weeks ago at our outdoor summer theatre. I was in the concessions line during the intermission. This guy standing behind me started talking about how big Catholic families were. He went on and on. His date finally asked him if he were Catholic. He said he was until he read the Bible. I couldn’t stand it. I turned around and told them I was a born again Catholic and I read the Bible every day. The guy was a young kid and appeared to be a little stunned. The girlfriend kind of smirked at him.:o
