We call both nuns and sisters “SISTER so&so”, is that correct?

And on the male side, isn’t a monk like a nun (live cloistered away from the world) and a friar is like a sister (live in community but in the world)?

Do we call friars “BROTHER so&so”, or are brothers something else altogether?

What do we call monks?

IIRC, there are essentially three types of male religious in the West: friars, monks, and canons. There are also hermits, but they aren’t necessarily religious per se.

I can’t give blanket rules for all religious, but Benedictine monks refer to their superiors as Father and their inferiors as Brother, regardless of whether they be priests or not. I’ve observed that a monk will usually refer to himself as Brother X, even if he be a priest. I’d generally refer to them all as Father X.

In the Byzantine Church our male monastics are addressed as Father, unless they are a novice then they are addressed as Novice or Brother Novice or just Brother.

I believe that our female monastics are addressed as sister.
