Would you take a life to defend a criminal?

Is posing this kind of scenario appropriate for these forums? I read a rule that said questions should be short… If it is not, does anybody know where such scenarios could be posed to a group of Catholics online?

You’re chained to the wall with a gun in your hand that has a single bullet. Standing before you is the man that gave you that gun, who through much personal trauma, has come to believe that some people don’t deserve second chances. He has killed a hundred hardened criminals - murderers and rapists - in cold blood. He currently has another defenseless murderer at gunpoint that killed somebody you personally know and care about. He is in full body armor with only his head exposed and tells you that if you don’t stop him, he is going to shoot the defenseless murderer, whom is repenting, and pleading for you to protect him. He cocks his gun. Based on your understanding of the Catechism and the Catholic faith, what should you do?

Fire on the unjust aggressor.

If I had to, I would shoot the evil aggressor in order to save a repentant sinner.

What do you think about letting the repentant sinner die, whom has a higher chance of receiving God’s mercy, in hopes that with more time on earth you can lead the aggressor that is incorrectly trying to rid the world of evil to repent?

I would have already used my bullet on the guy who was trying to chain me to the wall.

It is only just to defend the innocent; it wouldn’t be right playing that kind of game with human life. It’s awful that the aggressor would have to die, but that doesn’t give us the right to choose to let him or her kill an unarmed person when it’s in our power to save that person.

I agree. However, would the same “game” of thought have an effect on a decision where there is no aggressor?

If you had to choose between saving the earthly life of someone that you love the most, maybe a husband or wife, whom is a devout Catholic, and saving the earthly life of someone else that you love, maybe a best friend since childhood, whom wasn’t raised with faith and is currently agnostic, would there be a right choice? It seems like there would be a selfish choice.

Bullet to the head. Then i would use his head for scientific research in my underground lab where i keep all the other heads of vigilantes.

5th thou shalt not kill.
One has no right to kill, so I would not shoot.
If you think one should shoot, does this mean I should kill anyone I think may do wrong?

Self defense or defense of someone else is allowed. This person has expressed an explicit intent to shoot that person; that’s very much different from just acting on a hunch. Shooting the man who was about to shoot someone else would still be justified.
