Writing a note of condolence help

A neice of mine, high school senior and not raised Catholic, is greiving the loss of her 19 yr old boy friend. He was killed in a one car accident; drunk driving. Altho the deceased was a catholic of sorts, heavy on “sorts” his memorial service was at a mega church where the pastor is a part time high school football coach. It was, for all intents and purposes, a football rally. The deceased was a football star in local high school. He grad. 2 yrs earlier. I want to send my neice a note and explain in very simple terms and few words that there is no greater gift of love she can do for him, the boyfriend, then pray for him. Getting him to heaven by praying for him may be a life long goal for her.My question re: God and ‘time’. Is it a common point in Christian theology that there is no past, present or future, “time” with God? Is that something that escapes lots of protestents?

what on earth does ‘past, present & future’ have to do with a protestant in grief?

and praying for a deceased boyfriend a life long goal? are you getting her to become a nun or something? the best advise is to have her grieve, pray and move on.

and FYI, protestants do believe that God is outside of time.

Geez Louise, cool down. I simply want to help her understand that she can still do something wonderful for her friend thru prayer.

I would not get into that. Too confusing. Write her a condolence note. Have a Mass said for the kid, and give your neice the Mass card with an explanation of why Catholics do this. You might want to enroll him in one of those societies that offers Masses in perpetuity for the souls in Purgatory.

But don’t try to hard to explain all this right now. Just do the act of kindness. Tell her that you will pray for the boy, and give her a prayer card with a good, not-too-baroque prayer for the souls undergoing purification.

Inviter her Mass with you on All Souls day.
