I’m not sure what you mean by glorifying sin.

Could I, in good conscience, write action scenes about war heroes? I know other famous Christian writers, such as CS Lewis & JRR Tolkein did, but I just want a second opinion. What about a homosexual character?

Glorifying sin means to make it praiseworthy. To inspire imitation of it by your audience.

Don’t write a love scene that makes a reader wonder what’s new on his favorite porn site.

Violence for violence’s sake is not OK.

It’s the sin you need to be concerned about, not the characters. Is the war hero secretly committing war crimes? Is the homosexual having fun sleeping around?

Indeed, mindless violence also makes for bad storytelling. However, you also mentioned my war heroes shouldn’t be war criminals. That’s all fine, but can my villains be war criminals? As long as such behavior is shown as unacceptable, is it ok?

As for my homosexual character, after a little bit of thought, I’m going to rewrite him as female. It’s a comedy, and most of the stuff revolving around him involved “camp” jokes, which tend to upset people. However, rewriting that character to be a very, very feminine female will be more entertaining I think, and not make people upset.

Just wanted to interject a general thought that came to me this morning - remember that when you write, before you share your writing or attempt to get published, you can always revise. If something needs to be changed, toned down, or clarified, it can be done. You can also ask a trusted friend or teacher or maybe even a priest if you can find one who has time and likes to read, for advice and feedback to take into account when you do revise.
