I have searched the archives but rather than ressurect a six year old thread I thought I would start a new one. I have felt like doing this for quite a long time. I certainly can spare the time and effort. A penance I was given is the perfect tipping point to get me into action. Are there any good legitimate pen pal programs for writing to prisoners who really would like something like this? do many of them actually want to? visiting the imprisoned is among the corporal acts of mercy and it is one which is more difficult in these days, but this seems a viable alternative. I have checked and my diocese and others nearby have no such program. who can I contact about getting involved in this? any ideas?

Pax Christi.

It’s a wonderful idea! I have a friend in prison and I write to him, about once a month. We treasure the letters.

There must be pen-pal programs; I’ll look into it and let you know. It’s a form of visiting/comforting the imprisoned. Do it!!

God bless!

I would consult with someone experienced with the prison system as to how to go about this. How to guard your personal information, will talking about certain subjects be a help or an irritant to those in prison, efficacy of letters vs. personal visits.

If writing to someone you know, try Corrlinks. It is a way to correspond by email.
