Wrong choice

My Confirmation was a few months ago, and I feel like I picked the wrong saint as my role model. I like St. Cecelia, and chose her because I like music. But I don’t really feel a connection, and its hard to talk to her. Am I obligated to her, or can I choose another saint to have a devotion to, even though I’m already confirmed?

Choosing a saint to emulate at confirmation is not a life long obligation;it is not strictly speaking part of the sacrament. You also are not limited to a devotion to a single saint. Each of us will go through different phases of our lives where we may feel closer to a particular saint or another.

Also don’t feel like you would disappoint a saint if you choose someone else for a time. The saints want us to join them in adoration of God in heaven. As such they would be happy regardless if it is them or another saint that helps you grow in holiness.

You can’t change your Confirmation records, for sure, but it’s not like the other saint, who is not Cecilia, will ask you for a documented permission with your bishop’s signature before hearing your prayer. We’re allowed to honor an love an unlimited amount of them.

In fact, before my Confirmation, when I mentioned having picked a particular saint, my catechist even asked “Why? Why wouldn’t your baptismal patron saint work?”. Turned out the practice of picking a new patron saint at all varies by region. In the diocese I was confirmed in it wasn’t even necessary. I chose a patron, but a girl who was confirmed the same day did not.

I was in the same boat. I was confirmed with my baptismal name, which itself is not related to a saint. I only gained devotion to a couple saints a few years after confirmation and in many ways I say they almost chose me rather than me choosing them.
