Has an announcement been made in regards to World Youth Day 2022? Next year’s is in Panama, I think

The announcement will be made at the end of WYD 2019, during the closing Mass,

Casslean is correct. They traditionally announce the location of the next WYD at the end of the current one.

Not that they couldn’t change it up and announce it earlier. But I wouldn’t expect them to.

As long as they don’t have it in Pittsburgh, its fine with me. And not just WYD, but the Olympics,NCAA Final 4, the G20 and G8, major political conventions, etc.

This kind of even is paralyzing to those that live in the neighborhood, as I remember the G20 event here in 2009. The number of VIP’s and the security they require is over the top, and makes me want to leave town for the week.

Same here, but i’d like to see it come to North America soon- i want to go haha

Isn’t Panama technically part of the North American continent?

Where ever it is, I just hope it was better organized than the one in Rio 2013. The Vigil site was flooded and was moved to Copa Cabana beach. Problem was that there was nowhere near the required number of portable toilets and people were forced to poop on the beach and bury it. 3,000 toilets for a million people…

This was the night right before the big Papal Mass was held there…

not yet, will be at the end of wyd 2019, which, yes, is in panama. I am going.

normally, it’s once in Europe and then once outside Europe, that’s been the pattern so far, so theoretically 2022 should go back to Europe, however, I am sure the pope could change that if he wanted to.

On Brazilian television, at the time, they gave the figure as 3 million people present at the Papal Mass on Copacabana beach, not 1 million.

I don’t remember hearing anything at the time about the shortage of toilets. Were you there? It must have been very distressing.

Yes, I was there. The 1 million number were those who slept on the beach the night before for the traditional vigil. I got a slight case of food poisoning the day before so I didn’t do the vigil, but when I joined the group from my diocese for the mass, they told me the horror stories.

I wasn’t there, but some of the group I went to Krakow with were - they recounted the same horror stories.

Krakow was brilliant - given the number of people involved and heightened security concerns, it went very smoothly. The only real challenge was the heat on the day of the pilgrimage to Campus Misericordiae and too many people who weren’t adjusting for the temperatures. There were quite a few cases of heat stroke. But I loved every minute of it.
